Got to the Elbow Room, it is a great breakfast and the theme is a restaraunt that serves food and abuse.
Pretty funny to have waiters be rude in a joking way.
Just love it when sonebody asks for more coffee and the waiter says "get off your ass you know where it is"
It is run by two flamboyant gay men and it has pictures of all of the celebs that have eaten there.
If you want the best sushi anywhere go to Tojo's on Broadway (world famous). Prepare to bring your wallet as it is very expensive.
For a close by walk/ocean experience go to Lighthouse Park out by Horseshoe Bay. Great to see all the starfish and the seals sunning themselves. I always feel like I am miles out of the city when I go there.

Thanks for the help. Many of the posters on CP are happy to provide their insights, and may even live there. You are clearly not one of them. Move along.

But waiting there is part of the experience. Just go to the back, have a drink or 2 and enjoy the sampling of foods they'll provide.
An hour later you'll be warmed up, hungry and ready for one of the best meals you've ever eaten.
What's your age? who are you traveling with?

Buy a cow
Put in a barn next to an oil lamp.
Freak cow out
Leave Vancouver a historically smoldering ruin.

Just told the OP to be prepared to wait .... in case they didn't realize they couldn't make reservations and wanted to plan to do something else the same night.

Go for a romantic walk down Hastings. I would not go to any expensive sushi place in VAN - every second restaurant is Japanese, and most are much better than anything here, and much cheaper. Just wander down Robson or one of the side-streets and pick a place at random. Hearkening to my own roots, there is a good Russian/Uke place at Robson and Denman (I believe) - worth a try.

I realize that, good advice. Wasn't trying to argue your point, incase it came off that way. Was just adding to it.
Other Ideas:
- A dinner cruise would be a good way for you and the wife to check out the waters and it also give you great views of the various sides of DT and Stanley Park.
-Granville Island Market: If you're staying DT, there's little shuttle boats that will take you across the water for a few dollars.
-The Beach: If the weather's nice, maybe enjoy some time on the sand before it's too cold/rainy. Kits Beach has a new Boathouse restaurant right by the water too, which is a good spot for sea food, people watching and water watching.
-Agree with previous poster about not going for expensive Sushi. The cheep sushi is amazing, so there's no point
-Walk around Gastown, check things out and have a drink/bite in one of many good, intimate watering holes. I highly recommend Diamond
-Robson Street: If you've never been it's worth a walk just to feel the cities busiest street and maybe some shopping.
Walk 1 block South on Burrard and grab a Japadog from the street cart on the corner of Burrard/Smithe. They're famous Japanese styles hotdogs if you're into that sort of thing and want a cheep, quick, street food type lunch

I will be going to Vancouver at the end of the month for a night before heading out on a cruise. We're going to stay in downtown Vancouver for the night. Can anyone recommend a really great place to eat that isn't super expensive?

ya I agree on the sushi, no need to go to the expensive ones as the cheaper ones are for the most part pretty good

Wow there is so much hate on this board. to let you know, vancouver has had more sun then Calgary this summer (the last 3 months), it has rained more days in Calgary over those 3 months.
Vancouver is an amazing city, so much to do, and pretty cheap to spend a few days there. Honestly spend a few hours in the late afternoon wandering down grandville, you get so many world class street performers, its easy to burn a few hours enjoying there shows, and music.
If your wife is a shopper, there is lots downtown for her to enjoy, stores that you just don't see in Calgary, and huge selections.
As one of the posters above mentioned, just hop into a small sushi joint, its all very good compared to sushi in Calgary. Tojos has been said to have gone downhill drastically the last few years, as it became famous from TV, so prices are stupid expensive when you can go to other high class sushi joints, for much cheaper. Your paying for the name Tojo.
Lighthouse park is a nice area, only about a 20-30 minute drive from downtown. take a few hours and enjoy Stanly park! Walk the pathway that circles the park, its an amazing walk, and there are two paths one for walking the other for bikes and rollerbladers and stuff, so you don't have to worry about getting run over. If your in Vancouver I think you must visit Stanly Park. The aquarium is there two if that interests you.
If your into hiking head over to the Grouse Grind.
could go over to deep cove in North Van and rent some kayaks, beautiful area, then have dinner.
There is lots to do, you wont be bored.
