Default Nano age, the upcoming revolution.

A neat video that shows us some hints of the massive changes forthcoming in the next 50-100yrs.

The nano world changes us in such a profound way, something I'm sure many are frightened of, in some cases rightly so; this is a massive change of what a human is.

I watched this for a few minutes and stopped - I think this was made by a marketing guy. My undergrad specialization was in nano/lasers and my masters is in semiconductors... "nano" is a buzz word. There is some validity for nanotechnology, but a lot of it is a proof of concept at best, pie in the sky for a lot.

Nanotechnology just seems cooler sounding then, say, Phase Change Memory (see that is being released by industry in today's tech ticker at work).

Well the idea is you should watch the entire thing before making an opinion on it, especially when its Cambridge that makes the video with Stephen Fry narrating.

Nano isn't a buzz word, it's hardcore physics. It's true it can be awe-inspiring or frightening, depending on how it ends up being used. If it's for warfare, it could be hella scary.

No, nano is to denote 10^-9 not a physics concept. Its not just how cool it is that your iPod comes in pink too.

I wonder if this video will be viewed like the videos from the 60's and 70's trying to show what the world was going to look like in the year 2000.

As in way off on most things and only sorta right on a few.

I think the best measure of what the world is coming to, you look at what industry is doing not just idea blogs or proof of concept. From what I can see, there are a few things driving the industry (as far as "hardware" goes, not software):

- power management / low power design / alternative methods of harvesting power
- solar... LOTS of money going into there
- biomedical - high precision, low power, and cheap
- communication (modems, et al... a lot of research is being put into THz band, and I see that someone achieved THz operation in graphene but industry hasn't caught on... THz is very powerful, but I've seen some ideas that don't seem to be a prosperous idea to me, like vacuum tubes)

Really it doesn't sound as exciting as flying cars and so on, but its more real. Boring stuff like reliability start to kick in when you do something real.

Oh jeez I stand corrected. Thank you for this useful post

Of course nano is just nano and you're right there. But put it beside nanotechnology / nanophysics and you have something quite new to this world.

I remember when Michael Crichton's "Prey" came out and how a ton of scientist-types came out and said just how ludicrous the ideas in it were. I don't know the first thing about nanotech besides that. Just thought I'd chime in!

Its a well-made intro to Nanotechnology for ?high-school? students...not a video for experts...

I thought it was awesome and will make sure that the people at NanoAlberta are aware of it.

I am currently reading a book called the Singularity is Near. The future is a very scary thing but also quite exciting. I highly recommend this book if anyone wants a glimpse into what the future could hold for mankind when it comes to technology, science and medicine.
