I think the best measure of what the world is coming to, you look at what industry is doing not just idea blogs or proof of concept. From what I can see, there are a few things driving the industry (as far as "hardware" goes, not software):
- power management / low power design / alternative methods of harvesting power
- solar... LOTS of money going into there
- biomedical - high precision, low power, and cheap
- communication (modems, et al... a lot of research is being put into THz band, and I see that someone achieved THz operation in graphene but industry hasn't caught on... THz is very powerful, but I've seen some ideas that don't seem to be a prosperous idea to me, like vacuum tubes)
Really it doesn't sound as exciting as flying cars and so on, but its more real. Boring stuff like reliability start to kick in when you do something real.
