car rental and illegal crossing of border...
Anyone ever done this or know what the consequences are... My brother rented a car in the states for a holiday, but as he only has prepaid credit cards he did it from a smaller car rental company that allows prepaid Credit cards (not a hertz or other international one) He then after spending a few weeks in the states as planned drove to Creston B.C. with the car, across the border, he kept the car longer than he was supposed to and kept extending the return date when the guy phoned him by a day or two - he did this 4 times and the guy got a little worried apparently... he was on his way back to return it today... should be there already and the rental guy called my brothers wife and was threatening police action (basically accusing them of stealing the car) she explained that he was on his way but I guess the car is not allowed in Canada, never was... so the rental guy is freaking out, My brothers phone does not work in the states for some reason so we have no idea where he is and the rental guy says taking a rental car across the border is a big deal and the custom agents wont just let him through... basically I figure my brother is in deep caca... but I have no idea how much... Anyone have any incite on what will be happening to him? how much trouble he is in? my sister in law is freaking out.

Maybe its different with each company, but I took a Budget rental car across the US boarder earlier this year.
Hope everything works out!

You have a lot more leeway here than if you are wanting to cross the border into Mexico. The majority of car rentals in both Canada and the U.S. will allow you to take your rental car across the border, as long as you are planning to come back again. The exception to this rule is if you are a resident of the country that you are driving into. For example, if you are a Canadian citizen, you cannot take an American rental car into Canada unless it has Canadian license plates.
Also, if you are going to be taking a rental car across the border into Canada, you will need to show your rental documents to the border officials, so have them handy. In addition, you will probably need to purchase additional insurance, since the insurance that comes with the car rental wonīt cover accidents or theft outside of the U.S. You will probably need to have a Canadian non-resident insurance card in this case.
Talk to your rental company before attempting to cross the border, since you donīt want to be crossing without permission or insurance!

At least from Canada to US I know there is no issue, I have done it before.
If he gets a us customs person that is a "good guy" there shouldnt be a problem, if he gets a go-getter than he might be in deep.

I'm sure that the customs agent will be searching his anus to see if he's trying to smuggle more cars in to the States.

I know a couple of people that rented a car for a week in Massachusetts. Went to get on the Ferry between Bar Harbour and Nove Scotia, and were denied as the US rental car could not leave the country. The rental agent likely has a point.

Ya I think the confusing part here is that they were able to take the car across the Canadian border in the first place... Canada customs should have denied them... well I'm sure my bro knew he was doing something wrong but maybe not the extent... the rental company is now threatening to involve the police and report the car stolen... good times, being arrested by US highway patrol on stolen vehicle chargers is supposed to be fun, right?

he'll be fine. You can bring an American rental cars across the boarder you just can't bring an American rental car over the boarder and leave it in Canada. However, you can bring a Canadian rental car into the States and leave it there... weird, I know.

except usually the plates are a dead giveaway, along with any stickers on the car from the company

provided the car comes back without any incidents and he pays any fees, I bet he'll be ok. I wouldn't make a habit of this though.

I think every time I've driven across the border they've asked me who the car belonged to.
