Default Advice - Windows Home Server?

I am looking to wire up my new place for some serious media sharing. I want the hub of that to be a centralized file server running Windows Home Server (WHS). I am thinking of buying a HP MediaSmart EX495 to serve as
  1. Media provider for my WDTV HD Live Media Player
  2. Share movies/pictures/itunes songs between Macs and PCs in the House
  3. Backup said Macs and PCs

Has anyone used an HP MediaSmart or equivalent WHS-based solution to do this?

Hey buddy, thanks for the PM regarding IRC chat...that was a long time ago!

I'm running WHS on an Acer Aspire. (http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-AH.../dp/B001WGX15W) I bought it over a year ago, and have it connected to a gigabit router. That in turn connects to a Windows 7 machine, the main computer, and there are 3 other machines that regularly connect to the router: 1 xbox 360 in the main TV room, 1 xbox 360 in the bedroom (used for watching movies only), and 1 full sized arcade machine running Windows Vista in the games room/den. The main TV connection is hard wired while the other 2 are wireless.

Each of those machines is able to accept and process streaming of HD movies in 1080p. The wireless connection to the bedroom is unreliable and subject to suttering above 720p, but the hard wired connection to the main TV is flawless at 1080p.

Edit: I should also add that the iPad streams movies from the WHS with the AirVideo app....only over WiFi though not 3g.... better than the 360's do in terms of start up speed.... and does some kind of on the fly down-conversion but it never stutters and the video quality is great.

I bought the WHS because I got tired of looking at rows and rows of DVDs cluttered on my shelves... I ripped them all via the Windows 7 machine (using software called AnyDVD) to the WHS and the DVDs are now sitting stacked in my garage in bankers' boxes.... no more clutter.

I like iTunes but as you might expect it doesn't work with the Xbox 360's so I use the Windows application for streaming music.... and its pretty good, but inferior to iTunes. Eventually I'll phase out the 360's as better media players hit the market which allow competing applications. I don't know if your WD media player is compatible with iTunes, but I doubt it is. I do not know of any media device other than the Apple one (which sucks, quite frankly... but the next Apple TV will probably fix the issues) that integrates with iTunes properly. So don't expect to use iTunes on your main TV unless you get something like this: (check out the HDelight http://www.brite-view.com/)

I use the Mymovies app with Windows Media Center to manage the movie database. Search Mymovies on google and you can see its pretty slick. (edit: http://www.mymovies.dk/) Your WD media player will work fine with a WHS, but I'm not sure it will work with the mymovies app. I highly recommend the mymovies app.

If you have any other questions let me know... I started with 2 TB of storage and now have 4 TB, and am about to jump to 6....

let me tell you a story...

first off, i don't recommend that you buy that server. That runs whs1 and whs2 (code name: vail) is imminent and hp cannot (when i spoke with them 3 weeks ago) guarantee that there will be any native upgrade pathway for the server. so that means that you will be locked into the old platform. i should add that with the current package, there is an outcry because the move to whs2 means that you cannot just pull files off of your hard drives if your server crashes, as you can today with whs1. this is important to me but...

let me say that the concept is amazing; i had a mac, a desktop, an xbox, and 2 laptops running connected to my hp ex470. i dropped 2 1-tb drives in for a total of 2.5 TB, and then i mirrored the drives to give me duplicates of everything. good stuff. set the computers to backup nightly, and it worked awesomely! i was really impressed and really happy with it. if i could have kept using it like that...well...you wouldn't be reading what i am about to write.

here is where my experience goes south. hp decided to introduce a number of "enhancements" to the whs; i suppose in a generic sense they were to enhance the experience. so while i loved the features of the whs, i always had upgrades and updates dropped onto the server, and the only way you could find out about it was the lights flashing different colours. i literally spent hours managing the stuff that got passed through to my server, and making sure that everything was ok.

i should tell you what i used it for; i backed up my computers and i used to stream music etc through to the xbox. i can't remember if the ex495 uses time machine, but i think it does. my 470 couldn't do macs, but it was very good with the PCs and it was excellent to manage the backups as well. sharing stuff is no problem. media provider is also no problem, although i didn't use the wdtv i did use my 360 and it was great for that. i could also stream to the mac.

my server died less than 2 years after i bought it. the warranty is 1 year. i bought it with my visa which extends the warranty and extra year. hp will not touch it. they won't send me parts to fix it. i can't return it to them. they won't tell me what is wrong. the internet tells me that it is either a power supply or the mobo, however hp won't send those to me and i can't send it to them. so i now have a piece of junk sitting literally right beside me. is this common? from what i have read on the internet, it isn't that common. i would have appreciated being able to buy the parts and do the work myself, or even send it to hp and have them fix the thing. no, no, and no. i even asked them if the would send me a little email saying that it was unrepairable and hp wouldn't support it, to help with my warranty claim from visa. no dice. the guy was very helpful, but obviously his "helpdesk script" didn't allow him to help me. to top things off, he suggested that i buy the one that you are looking at. i asked if there were any discounts for people that had a 470 crash, and of course there wasn't.

i loved my little server but i now realize that it was due to the software and not the hardware. people were amazed when i showed them what i could do with it and how i used it.

if you are still interested in the ex495, i recommend that you get the one that has the dual core processor and the 2gb (IIRC) of ram.

i will also add that of the last 4 HP products that i have bought, 3 have died on me and only 1 got support, and that was after i emailed mark hurd (hp global president at the time) to complain about the runaround that i was getting from his canadian operations. i won't ever buy another hp product. in fact, it led me to write quite a rant against microsoft's hardware partners here: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...icrosoft+apple

the only, and i mean only good thing to come from my experience is in fact a positive from microsoft. whs1 data was stored in hidden folders on the drives themselves; by plugging the drives in and knowing where to look, i found all my pictures and stuff and was able to move it to one of my computers to save my server. not really what i bought a 24x7 server for!

in that thread that i posted, there are some most excellent posters and i really appreciated the time that they took to talk me down off of my ledge...or at least make change in my home network at a more managed pace than i was prepared for at that time.

thanks to those posters, i am now looking at the drobo fs with the memory express support package and the mozy for offsite backup. haven't pulled the trigger, but i am definitely looking right at that. i am using an iphone and a blackberry for work, comparing them as it were, and am far more open to the concept of apple than i have ever been. i will never lose the microsoft platform completely, but it will likely be boxes that i build myself and of course never an hp.

i am happy to answer any questions via PM or on thread; i owe my fellow CPers big time for all of their posts and the time that they took to write in my thread and i have to "pay it forward"!

no matter what you do buy with a credit card that extends the warranty!

i just read delgar's post. i think that the acer that he refers to has really great reviews.

i should add, as delgar did, what my connections were like.

i have a linksys 610 router which connects to my gigabit wired network in my house. all of the computers connect wirelessly except the desktop. the 360 was wired to the router. i never had any stuttering or any other problems, however i was only streaming at 720p and that will have had an effect.

wireless was awesome to all of my mobile devices.

i love the home server; come to think of it, i just hate HP's execution of it. if you like the concepts, go with the acer but remember that vail is due soon.

McG,

We were writing at the same time so didn't have the benefit of each other's posts...I take it the Acer I have will also be obsolete in the near future? What are the benefits of the new WHS? The current version does everything I want it to but I'm always up for the next thing.

acer in my experience (i have an acer laptop) aren't as controlling or as proprietary as a company like HP that has to introduce code and hardware in addition to what is already in the package. it is really hard to say if you will get the ability to upgrade; technically it should be possible, but it is hard to be definitive. my gut tells me that you will be able to do it but that depends upon microsoft and acer.

http://www.wegotserved.com/whs-vail-preview/ is a pretty good site and a good write up of the new features. vail just got released in a public preview in mid august; the earlier package was released in april. it is all over the internet so some google searches and avoiding the obvious fanboy stuff and you should get a pretty good picture of the software code.

vail is based upon win server 2008 r2 and should take advantage of all that has happened in the last 5 years in server software.

i have to admit that the new whs is appealing...but i am likely going towards a pure nas device with media server capabilities.

i wish that i had bought the acer!

edit: i just saw the ram specs and it looks like 2gb minimum for vail. that's going to limit some upgrades...and amorak should be careful when buying!

I would wait for Vail to be released before buying hardware. Because Vail is 64 bit, you won't be able to upgrade your current windows home server to the new OS.

That said, I did a trial of WHS on my server at home and it really rocks. Cost effective and powerful tool for the home user. One thing I learned really fast though, don't expect to plug an existing external drive into the server and use it for anything without it being formatted though. It will format any drive you put in and ask it to use as data storage.

I've thought about using WHS but I'm wondering if there's anything it can do that a Drobo can't. Right now I'm using my main desktop as a media server, but it sucks too much power to keep running all the time. A Drobo is small, quiet and easily upgradeable when it comes to storage. But if WHS has any advantages I'd look into it.

I knew the Flames were subject to suttering, but I had no idea he could wreak havoc on your home network.

Anyone interested in buying/building a WHS may want to buy a book called WHS Bible. MAY be a tad out of date these days but an awesome book that looks at all the different features of WHS including some features current owners may not be aware of.
