Default AVI Files broken? Unable to watch movies

Hey all, I'm trying to download parts of a show and the way they set it up is in more than one part for an episode.

It's odd because the files I'm downloading are in avi.001 or avi.002 depending on the part.

What I've been doing is switching it so it's an .avi file. I use VLC, so when I play the first part, this comes up:

Quote:
This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly.
Do you want to try to repair it (this might take a long time) ?"
So I go ahead and click yes, and eventually it starts to work. This does not work however for parts 2, 3, 4...etc.

My question is how can I get those other parts to work like the first part did?

This is what comes up on the other parts:

Quote:
"ffmpeg: Seeking too far : EOF?
ffmpeg: av_open_input_stream failed
ps: cannot peek
main: no suitable demux module for `/:///filename'
access_file: seeking too far
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Use a program like this to join the various .001, .002, etc files into the full .avi:

It can be various things. Like AC said, it's most likely a split file. You need his program or HJSplit. The new Quickpar versions can put these together sometimes as well.

Sometimes though, .001, .002, etc. files are split volume compressed archives and you need a program like Winrar to combine them although some archives, quickpar will do as well.

I've used HJSplit, simple and it works. Don't forget to change the file extensions back.

Take this for what it's worth - generally you don't want to download anything that has been split/compressed into a .RAR archive. There is a much higher chance of getting a trojan/virus/malware in these distributions then if you found a link that contained only a .AVI.

What are you talking about? This is nonsense. And even if they did bundle in a friendly application for you, all you have to do is extract only the video.

Pretty much everything released on newsgroups is compressed/split into RAR volumes with PAR files to rebuild any missing parts.

I've been a newsgroup leech for a decade and barely ever encounter anything malicious.. and like sclitheroe said, even if you do... just don't click on it.
