Nenshi a hit in Toronto!
Who would have thought he would have such an impact. I have been very impressed by him so far.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Ma...034/story.html
"One of the most impressive speeches I've seen in this room, and I've seen dozens. Funny. Smart. Penetrating. Impressive," veteran public broadcaster Steve Paikin wrote on Twitter, before taping Nenshi's fourth of six interviews later in the day.
One political observer expressed doubt that any federal politician could deliver a speech like that.
"It appears the axis of power for city-building has moved West," said Toronto Coun. Shelley Carroll, referring to Nenshi and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, another progressive young civic leader.
Although Nenshi said it's unfair and overly simplistic to compare him to Toronto's new conservative Mayor Rob Ford, for many inner-city denizens it's very real, and has engendered a phenomenon Calgary supporter John Manzo dubbed "Nenvy."
"This Nenshi thing is like being a kid forced to go Boxing Day at the cousins' after Christmas and feeling cheated by the toys you got," wrote a Torontonian watching from afar via the social networking site that Nenshi himself uses obsessively.

And John is none too happy with dealing with the #### storm that the Herald caused by dubbing him as the creator of "Nenvy"

i laughed when i read that Toronto elected a redneck mayor after we had elected a young progressive. definitely not something i would have expected to happen, certainly shows how much the demographic has changed in Calgary over the last 10 years

I also enjoyed the ad going around saying that Nenshi is hitler. Brilliant!

Ha! I assume you're in his lecture, cause he said this basically word-for-word today.

I can understand why some people would be concerned about this but at the same time I think that this is just such small potatoes on the grand scheme of things and as long as he is honest with where he gets small things like plane fare it isn't a huge deal.

One alderperson compared it to the free trip to Monaco given to the ex CEO of Enmax.

Why would alderpeople be upset about a private company getting his plane fare? It didn't come out of city coffers. This is Nenshi living up to his campaign promises of cutting spending at City Hall. I like it.

Yes... a working visit to Toronto versus a vacation to Monaco.
Totally equivalent. Which councilor is it?

He's the one calling Nenshi out on this, and yet I don't think he disclosed his own donor list during the last election, did he?
Pot calling the kettle black, IMO.

Interestingly, Theo Fleury is guest hosting CBC's The Current tomorrow, and taped an interview with Nenshi. Should be interesting.

referring to Nenshi and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, another progressive young civic leader.
don't think Gregor should be mentioned in the same sentence, his approval numbers have been dropping fast, and he is more interested in raising his personal profile than doing actual work as mayor
everything I have read on Nenshi is the opposite, he is more interested in doing the work and his profile is raising because of it

So Lowe is the new Dr No? No surprise there...
Glad Calgary finally has a mayor that is a positive influence on the city as well as Canada. So far he's kept his end of the bargin with the airport tunnel and the park and ride issues... hope it carries through with everything he's promised.
He really need to update his website and facebook page tho... both still say Nenshi for Mayor.

According to an...ugh...Rick Bell article on the issue, here's Nenshi's reaction:
Quote:
"I’m standing on principle. Who is complaining? A couple of aldermen who have not exactly been champions of disclosure and transparency and are mad about losing a vote on Monday.”
“I did what I said I would and I saved the taxpayers money. If any aldermen are implying I can be bought for $721.51 for something that’s not being sold that’s an interesting conversation we can have.”
The aldermen are Gord Lowe and Diane Colley-Urquhart, the vote is on the airport tunnel.
...
I’ve spoken to over a thousand people here, got millions of dollars in press and publicity and extremely rave reviews and this is what you’re writing a story about?” says Nenshi, on the phone from Toronto, adding there’s “no evidence” Calgarians are peeved.
