Used car advice
Just that, I'm looking at buying a new used car, probably as soon as next month.
I'm just wondering if any of you have advice to give me on the best places to look. I'd prefer buying from a dealership.
Just to give you all an idea.
I'm looking for nothing older then 07, price range between 20 and 30, depending on financing options.
I'm undecided on what I'm getting, part of me whats to look at jeeps, the other wants me to look at something fun to drive.
Anyways, I thought I'd tap into the awesome mental capabilities of CalgaryPuck.

I prefer buying privately. Even though some dealerships will offer a bit of a warranty. Its not worth the extra couple of thousand you'll pay. Most vehicles come with a 5 year powertrain warranty anyhow so the expensive things are already covered. A well researched private buy is as safe as buying from a stealership.

I love playing this game, but we need more info man. Are you partial to any brands? Want to avoid any brands? Two-door? Four-door? FWD? RWD? AWD? Does fuel economy matter? You can get a lot in that price range.

I agree with burn_this_city. Key being "well researched". If you'd rather simplify and have the peace of mind of a stealership, then that's fine too. Not everyone has the time/savvy to make a smart private deal.
I know it's kijiji, but, how about this?

The value of a 2010 Genesis is going to plummet. I think his plan of getting an '07 is the way to the best value as the previous owner will have paid the bulk of the depreciation. Plus isn't the turbo Genesis the chick one anyway? That's like buying a six banger Mustang lol.

Thanks for the advice guys. The tough thing is I don't really know what I want yet.
I like the idea of 4 wheel or aw. Some days, I'm a jeep guy, the next I'm something else. I guess I have to get serious about what I'm going to get.
I'm convinced that I'm not really going after brand spanking new off of the lot as I feel I can get better bang for the buck with a relatively new pre owned.
There aren't a lot of brands of cars that I don't like, but I'm not a ford person, or a KIA type of person.
I've owned Chryslers for my last two cars and they've been solid and really reliable. I owned a Hyundai and I drove that thing unmercifully and it just wouldn't die.

Yeah, they are to the 2000s what the Accord was to the 90s around here.

Infiniti's are a rip off in Canada.
In 2007 I bought a brand new G35 6MT Coupe for less than I could buy a used 2006 lease return with almost 30000KM on it. The difference between what I payed and MRSP in Canada was about $20000 Canadian.
I bought in Colorado but I'm sure you could find a lot more vehicle for the money most anywhere state side.
As a result I have the vehicle serviced by Nissan of Canada because I have no interest in giving Infiniti of Canada ANY of my money.

Um welcome to every car brand. This isn't an Infiniti issue. I saved $12K buying my '07 Sienna in Washington vs Calgary.

Really only imports are enough of a difference to make a cross border sale worth while.
Having paided the same import duty that the dealership has to pay (I believe it was 5.9%-6.1.%) how do these guys justify that price difference.
Please consumers wise up, because until their sales are drying up (which will unfortunately cost Canadian jobs) these stealerships will continue to fleece Canadians.
It also can be detrimental to the American dealership as a large portion of their bottom line is from continued servicing of the vehicles they sell. This is why you will get some dealerships that will outright refuse to sell to Canadians.
Oh and the reason I chose Nissan for the service (aside from the fact that an Infiniti is a Nissan product) was their MSRP gap between US and Canada was the smallest. I don't think it would be worth your effort to buy a Nissan 350Z/370Z in the US, the pricing is too close.
In Infiniti why would I pay more for a car that Calgarians are buying like crazy? Those increased volumes should allow for more competitive pricing, but it seems to cause the illusion of pent up demand. Importing a vehicle is child's play and the dealers had better come to that realization soon.

Its not the dealers fleecing consumers its the manufacturers Canadian division. Stop buying cars from manufacturers that think we're stupid enough to rip off. BMW is the biggest culprit, for the cost of an M5 in Canada you can buy a US M5 plus a lower end 3 Series car.

I agree. I can't for the life of me understand why anybody would buy a new car in Calgary. It is beyond easy to pick one up in the States and save your self thousands and thousands.

Agreed, but if I like the product I am going to buy it where it is most economical. As a Canadian that pisses me off because I would like to buy locally and support a Canadian dealer.

I just bought a brand new 2010 Q5, and at that price point it wasn't worth going to the states ($52K). I got a small car importer/dealer to try to find me one in Canada and in the US, since it takes 4 months to get one here.
After looking at both sides, it was $500 more to buy in Canada (after US import/taxes). Not really as big of a difference as I thought, as I was set to buy in US hands down at the start. However, he found one in Vancouver for me, and it was at my house in 4 weeks vs. 4 months if you go to Glenmore or Royal Oak Audi.
In talking with the car importer, he said the only car he has ever seen worth while to import new is a Porsche 911 Turbo, he just did one for a client, and saved $20K vs. Canada (on a $120K sale).
I am not saying all new cars are not worth while, but as with anything do your research. As for used, I think it might be better to go the US route, but again make sure that isn't an assumption, but a fact.
I have the contact for the car importer/dealer if you want. He is really good, and way cheaper than a dealership. PM me if you want his contact.
