Default Best place for hockey gear for a 6 year old

My son starts timbits this year and we'll need to outfit him from a helmet on down.

I don't see the need to get high end stuff but do want to make sure it all fits right and will be comfortable etc.

Where have hockey moms and dads had the best experiences?

Thanks in advance

i'd recommend finding a sports shop that sells used stuff

kids grow like weeds and they'll outgrow their gear in a hurry.

i'd just throw it in the wash (especially if you have a front-loading washing machine) and make sure you add some bleach - everything comes out smelling oh so nice (i wash my goalie gear probably 3 times/year... everything except my pads)... then hang to dry - works like a charm!

i know in kelowna there are stores like sports excellence and sports traders that have used gear - that's where i'd start

Good 'ol Canadian Tire is where I usually shop, but this year the boy and I went and checked out Hockey Life. Liked it. I've tried Sports Swap in teh past, but didn't think the savings were there.

Back to Canadian Tire. When my son first started (4 years ago) they had a starter set in a box (not including skates or helmet) for around $90. I don't know if they still have it.

If you are willing to drive to Nanton, my friend owns Beaks Athletics. Got my 6 year old out-fitted for $230 (already had skates and helmet) but bought everything else there, including stick, tape, equipment bag. 20% off everything.

For Timbets/Novice age the starter packs are the way to go right around $100 (if I remember correctly - its been a couple of years) shoulder pads, elbow pads, pants and shin pads... SportsMart has a them, as does Canadian Tire...

Try out Play it Again Sports if you're in the market for saving some money on used stuff.

For new, shop around for sales. Pro Hockey Life, Hockey Experts, Sport Check will be the cheapest and have the best selection.
Source for Sports will be more expensive but would be better if you were looking for knowledgeable staff or higher end stuff (not needed IMO).
If you really want to go hardcore hit up Pro Skate, but be prepared for really really high prices (they specialize in the best gear). Also, their staff are extremely knowledgeable but be prepared for the elitist attitude that seems to be attributed with going there.
