Pretty pathetic that these guys are doing this only 3 weeks after that little girl was killed by a flying piece of metal debris.

Is it really that surprising given a decent amount of our tradesmen and workers are the rejects from other Provinces?

Having had a bar taken over across the street from our office by these constructions workers on a new office tower, I can tell you their level of maturity/intelligence would floor you.

Its a shame that there are enough morons in the trades that there is now a stigma attached to the working man as being less intelligent/mature. 95% of tradespeople are honest, hardworking, and no less intelligent than anyone else.

I agree. My dad is a bricklayer and there is not a finer man on the face of the planet. I'd say it's a generational thing. Before the last boom, people went into trades because it was a family business or vocational calling. Tradesmen were more legitimately viewed as craftsmen. Now I think most young guys are just in it for a quick buck.

Trust me, It works both ways.
Seeing office workers write dirty jokes on the bathroom stalls, playing with bouncy balls in the hallways and playing Farmville on their computers during work hours doesn't scream 'That's an intelligent, Mature 35 year old man'.

First year employees make almost as much as I do! I guess there is no demand for political philosophy types.

Yup, it's very sad. Everyone in my family up until me worked in a trade and the behaviour of today's workers makes them sick.

A lot of today's trade workers in Calgary are here because A) They aren't good enough at their trade to get steady work in their hometowns where there are other options who do a better or job or B) Don't give two craps where they work and just want to make as much as possible with as little of effort.

I've never really been down on this line of work, but lately it just really gets to me. I've been going to the same place after work for 6 years now, and never saw one fight or yelling match (let alone a disagreement) until about a year ago when the new tower went up. It's a frequent occurence now. So much so that a lot of my coworkers have stopped going.

In between swears and slurs, you often here the " F this place, i'm here for the money" line of thinking. Kind of reminds me of when the Riders come into McMahon..... There couldn't possibly be a link between the two could there?

Remember, this is the same work ethic that's building all your million dollar condos. I'd definitely stay away from the majority of "boom times" real estate. If the attitude is this crappy on the job site, it's sure to surface in the quality construction.

One would hope, that with the slowdown of the economy, the crap will be weeded out a bit.

Just because they are horsing around doesn't mean they aren't doing their job right. They are stupid as bricks but still know how to build your million dollar condos. Probably the only thing they are smart at.

This isn't a shot at trades people because I'm one myself, but I know many people in the trades who are dumb as door knobs, but are highly experienced and do a great job in their work.

WHen I was in the process of buying my home both my dad and my real estate agent told me to stay the hell away from anything built between 2003 and 2007. WHen I told that to my buddy (a contractor in Northern Alberta) he echoed the statement because he built some houses here for some companies when he was first starting out (working for someone else) he says some of the corners cut were brutal and if he could go back in time he would have walked off the job site.

Except the government is still giving out work visas and those people can still afford to do the job for a hefty discount. Sometimes people would rather get a crappy job at half the price which is sad.
