Default Sasktel to launch 3G network in August

SaskTel has just announced that they’ll be launching the “first phase” of their 3G+ network as a “technical trial” for select employees. This trial will last for 6 weeks and will “resolve any technical issues prior to a commercial launch”. For the rest of us we’ll have to wait until August 16th, 2010 as this is the consumer go live date.

When it comes to coverage, SaskTel states that “customers in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Yorkton, Swift Current, Prince Albert, North Battleford and most of the connecting highways” will get access. In addition, 3G+ will be available province-wide by the end of 2010.

They are still in talks to bring the iPhone 4 to their network but confirmed that they will launch with the BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Pearl 9100, Nokia 7230, Nokia 6350 and a Novatel MC998D USB data stick.
And since Telus apparently has a deal with them, I'm thinking Telus HSPA devices will finally have service in Sask in August.

Back in October last year SaskTel signed a network sharing agreement with TELUS and Bell so there are many devices that they have access to. What devices do you think they’ll launch with?

I sure hope this means Telus devices will work on their network.

No thanks. I'll just look it up on my 3g phone.

I hope for your sake that is the case, but I wouldn't be so sure. My experience with my CDMA Telus phone was that I would typically only get 1X coverage in places where Sasktel was offerring EVDO. And 10 years ago I would only get an analog signal where Sasktel people were getting digital.

Plus Telus' coverage maps now show the future coverage for Saskatchewan as "planned to be available by Winter 2011"
http://www.telusmobility.com/en/AB/h...da3gmaps.shtml

I know before it said 2010; so does Winter 2011 mean January or December?

I don't know.

All I know from scouring the internet and talking to Telus people is that they made a deal with SaskTel and Telus HSPA devices will work on the SaskTel 3G network once its up and running.

Who knows when the actual date will be.
