Adding second hard drive to computer problem

I tried adding a second 1 tb hard drive to my computer to hold all my media files. Plugged it in booted up and reformatted it transfered a file over and everything worked just fine. Turn the computer off and try to reboot it and it freezes when its running through the ide drives and what not. It will not go far enough for me to get into bios. If I unplug the new hd i can still boot the computer off the original no problem. If I plug just the new hd without original in it won't go far enough to get into bios so I can fool around in there just like when both are on.

I have no other ideas on how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated

But how can I change that if I cannot get into the bios? Also there doesn't seem to be jumpers on it to do it manually

The old drive perhaps, many times it is set to cable select.

Also fiddling in bios, there might be a setting for the SATA/IDE setting that indicates that the SATA drive is duplicated as another IDE device, and you'll either need to change your DVD drive to a different configuration, or run the SATA in AHCI

The other thing is to plug the sata drive into a different port, and see if that works as well, (instead of 0, plug into 1 or 3 instead of 2, YMMV)

IDE drive or SATA?

Assuming IDE, have you tried running both drives on the same channel? Separate channels? Have you tried switching channels?

IDE drives should always have a jumper or a switch for setting master, slave, or cable select.

Sorry I am bad with these things it is SATA 11. Have tried different ports. My buddy just gave me the computer so give me a few and I will go down stairs and get the specs

Yeah if it's SATA there won't be jumpers and you can ignore all the master/slave talk. If you've tried all the ports, and the original HD works fine, chances are the hard drive's controller is messed up. Can you still take it back?

The only other thing to try is different cables. Try out the cable from the working HD and see if the PC will POST.

Ya tried swapping the cables around and the original HD still functioned. I should be able to take it back since I got the extra replacement plan.

So I just took the drive back and thanks to purchasing the extra product replacement and memory express' excellent customer service I was in and out of the store in 5 mins (would have been quicker but I am on crutches) new drive installed and movies transfered over to it! I am good to go with adding more to my collection and eventually ripping all the movies I own on to it as well.
