After a two-year trial, a Canadian judge on Wednesday acquitted two Indian-born Sikhs of murder and other charges in the deaths of 331 people killed when bombs exploded aboard an Air India plane over the Atlantic and at a Tokyo airport 20 years ago.
British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Ian Josephson said the prosecution's key witnesses were not credible.

Is anyone surprised? And that's a couple billion in dollars prosecuting this you'll never see again.

Just another Canadian injustice and joke. At least in the states they actually dish out punishment and justice...

'After Reyat's guilty plea, Malik and Bagri chose a trial by judge.'
I was not aware that was an option...

these guys are undoubtedly marked men in india, after what most people pin on them.
why not deport them to india, let the situation take care of itself?
they won't make it out of the airport.

On what grounds would you deport them, they're innocent men according to the Canadian Courts.

I do believe that Canada wouldn't be willing to deport these guys for further trial elsewhere. Just a guy feeling but the civil liberties groups in Canada would throw a cow if we deported those idiots.

true.
only guys that have bad public opinions are deported - like say ernst zundel (whose opinions i do not share), while accused murderers get the red carpet.
maybe ole' ernst should have killed some people. he'd still be spouting off in canada instead of his native (and now substantially changed) germany.

I don't disagree, my gut feeling is that we let guilty men go, but then again I'm not a judge.
Its a definate blow against the Canadian justice system that the prosecutors were too inept to control this case. This trial wasn't won because of an overwhelming proof of innocence, it was won because of poor preperation

like the mcveigh trial, and how the FBI really nearly blew it. massive blunders, etc.
amazing really, maybe the size of these cases makes prosecutors tremble. i mean some of them spent their careers trying to get DUI convictions while cops royally screw evidence and procedure, or try like hell to pin some minor charge on some major criminals knowing it won't stick.
no excuses, just looking for reasons.

If I recall the defense made one RCMP witness admit that she lied to the police about the where abouts of the defendants on a key date. From that point I knew the case was over.
We're going to see a major major change in investigation techniques.
One thing is for sure though. If the Air India event had happened after 9/11, the police would have had way more lee way in gathering evidence.

It is going to be interesting to see how the Sikh community in Vancouver reacts to this...if the "community at large" perceives Bagri and Malik of having anything to do with the bombing, those two (and their supporters) will be more "isolated" in Vancouver than they would be in India...more division and conflict in an already divided community...

Well, reading the Calgary Sun today, it seems that the Sikh community in Calgary had the ridiculous idea that this trial was against the entire Sikh community, not just two (allegedly) cowardly terrorists.
It's almost fascinating to see the unity amongst the Sikh community in support of these two, even though many of the dead came from their community as well.
Also, I read in the Sun that CSIS prefered to destroy vital evidence rather than share it with the RCMP. And yet, the great preventer of justice: The Liberal Party of Canada refuses to call an inquiry into this mess.
Colour me unsurprised.
