Question about working Canada Day.
My employer has informed me that I will have Thursday July 1st off and I will have to work Friday the 2nd, then I get Sat/Sun off as usual.
Is this normal? I was under the impression that some businesses take the Friday off to ensure a long weekend. I'm not upset or anything, I'm just not very familiar with labour laws.
Thanks.
By the way, I'm new to this forum and this is my first thread. However I've lurked for almost a year now.

That is normal. I get thursday off but have to work Friday. I dont know of any company who would give you friday off for free. It might look that way at some places but most people are using vacation time to take friday off
EDIT I am full time salaried if that makes a difference, I assume it doesnt.

It's normal.
At my business we are closing Thursday and Friday, but the staff is taking Friday as an unpaid day off.

This is pretty normal, some companies have "assigned days off" that they schedule around long weekends in the summer (like where I work, except I am on call, since some of the groups I support are working)...it all depends on the company

I was kind of hoping for something like this. I don't mind working Friday but a 4 day weekend would be sweet.

Working for government, we get all the good holidays off but even we have work on July 2nd. However, that Friday happens to be my Friday off so I get the 4 day weekend anyways

The best you could hope for is that they have you work the Thurs and give you the Friday in lieu. most business' won't bother, as not much gets done when the rest of the country is partying. We are doing something similar, we have to work the Sunday prior and we are having a 4 day weekend. I hate when stats fall mid week!

Thank you for the replies.
The reason I'm a little bit put off is because most of my office is working Canada Day and then taking Friday off. There are only like 6 people in my office and as far as I know I was the only one not given the option of working Thurs instead of Friday. Also, I'm a little bit unhappy because I know they'll all work for about 3 hours on Thursday and then go home, while I'll have to put in a full 8 hours on Friday.
If you're going to ask why I can't go home early on Friday it is because they are salaried and I'm hourly so they'll know if I leave early.

I work for a non-profit, who provides services to other non-profit organizations. The CEO tries to get the personnel committee to have an extra day off whenever holidays like Canada Land on a Tuesday or Thursday, so we can have the extra long weekend. Doesn't always happen, but usually does. This year I get a 4-day weekend. However, I'm the IT guy, and I'm on-call that weekend. I don't have to be on-call for Canada Day, but I do have to be available on that Friday.
Aside from non-profit, I've never worked for a place that would do the same. There are places out there who may do so, but its not common to give the extra day off.
