PS3 lag issue
So my brother-in-law wanted to spark up some FIFA 10 last night. I was happy to oblige so England could slap around some Italianos for a little bit (hopefully).
We were experiencing a strange lag issue. Every (approx) seven seconds, the game would freeze for about one second, and then continue. Obviously not playable and annoying as eff. Six months or so ago we played and everything was fine. A couple of months ago we tried and this was happening so we abandoned it.
This is what I know:
- It happens for him whenever playing FIFA 10 online. It only happens to me when I play him. So I can rule out my system.
- He tweaked the router by forwarding ports and making a DMZ for his PS3 to no avail. I finally got him to plug the PS3 directly into the cable modem (Shaw), and the problem persisted. Router ruled out.
- It happens with or without our headsets turned on.
- There doesn't seem to be any other issues with the internet connection. Regular browsing on other computers is fine, he plays Xbox as well and that works fine. He also tested a couple of other PS3 games online and they appeared to be fine. It would appear that this is a FIFA-only problem, unless FIFA uses the internet connection differently than other games or the issue simply isn't noticeable on other games.
- He reset his PS3 back to factory settings (but not a full reformat) and the problem persisted.
- All updates have been installed for both the PS3 and the game.
- Because we only play sporadically, it is very difficult to pinpoint an actual time or event that caused it to start.
- (Edit) He also logged into his brother's PSN profile and nothing changed.
Unfortunately we don't have any other games in common (as much as I have tried to get him to get NHL 10!).
So - CP geeks (I use the term affectionately) - what should we try next? He's going to try a full reformat, but I'm not confident that it will make any difference.
