Default Travelling with over $10,000

I'm moving and have saved up about $17K. I know in airlines you can only travel with $10K, so I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to bring over the other $7-8K. None of my banks have affiliates in Brazil so I can't transfer them that way when I get there. Any tips?

Also, does anyone have any tips for carrying the $10K on flights? A really big wallet, or does someone have more practical ideas from experience?

I prefer using a black briefcase handcuffed to me. Although on a long flight to Brazil they might make you stow it in the overhead which could be an ackward seating arrangement.

Open a bank account with a bank that does have an affiliate in Brazil and put the money into that account?

Bank draft or money order.

Or do the black briefcase thing. Don't forget the dark sunglasses if you go that route.

Do the briefcase thing just for the hell of it. Wear a pin-stripe suit and dark glasses and carry a glass full of rum n coke.

You can travel with more than $10,000 so long as you declare it. I'm sure you'll have to explain why you're traveling with so much money, but it isn't illegal or anything.

If you're moving and will be setting up local accounts and everything, I'd go and talk to your Canadian bank (assuming you're moving from Canada) and find out what they would advise. With so much money floating around electronically in the modern world, I don't think you'd really need to carry everything in cash. You should be able to open an account with a Brazilian bank (there are probably some banks that have branches in both Brazil and Canada if you look for them - HSBC advertises themselves as "the world's local bank") and get your Canadian bank to transfer the funds into the new account.

If you're intent on carrying it with you, I'd get most of it in a bank draft, so you're not actually carrying a briefcase full of Benjamins.

You could always give it to me. Once you get down there, I could wire the funds to you.

Or a family member could do the same.

I'll be sure to do that on the way to the beach with all the ladies...

I'll try banks like HSBC but never thought of a money order, though. Good idea. Thanks!

What your best to do is convert your money to cocaine, and carry that across the boarder. Less questions if they catch you. Then sell it once your there.

In all seriousness I wouldn't be carrying that kind of cash here, let alone in Brazil. There are several options for transfering your money to a bank there. I think HSBC is one bank that is an affiliate and could do it.

However, some time in my life I'd like to have to check yes to the question of carrying more the $10,000 cash. It'd be wonderful coming back from Vegas with that dilema.

Also, keep in mind that even if you're carrying a bank draft, it's considered the same as cash, so you'd still have to declare that you're carrying in excess of $10G.

Or you could just put it in your luggage and hope it doenst get lost.

Where you take you cash shouldnt be anyones buisness but your own. I havent taken 17K but I have taken alot of cash durring one trip, didnt declare it, just put it in my luggage and insured the luggage for the amount.

Waiting for your bag at the belt will be a little nerve racking but.
