Mortal Kombat rebooted?
Will change the established story a little, but it certainly brings back the memories

Readers are wondering if we know something about it, people are Twittering about it, and everyone is wondering what the hell it means. The "it" in question? A seemingly random preview for a new Mortal Kombat... something. A film? A video game? The timing is a little too perfect—E3 is around a week away—and this certainly has people talking about the franchise.
Take a look, but fair warning: this gets graphic in places.
Looks like this has been in production for quite some time, but Threshold is suing Warner to stop it... i would guess this is either a leaked trailer, or they settled there differences.
So their choice in undercover guy is... ex movie-star that everyone recognizes? That's real smart!
Johnny Cage is dead, Liu Kang is nowhere to be found. 7 of 9 is Sonya Blade. Scorpion is nolonger a villain but the new hero. Interesting and a bit wierd but more grounded I guess.
I prefered the netherworld taking over thing myself.

Scorpion was never a villain. More of an anti-hero. His entire aim in every game was to defeat Sub Zero for his unwarranted death IIRC.

Maybe he was portraying himself as a playboy ex-movie star with lots of money looking for drugs and high-stake gambling rings or he's a master of disguise. I mean with with Reptile and Baraka that's not the most unbelievable part of the trailer.
Looks pretty awesome, I always loved Mortal Kombat though so I'm excited.
People are actually thinking this looks good? A friend linked this to me earlier and I thought it looked awful.
Baraka is a plastic surgeon who does self mutilation and inserted blades into his arms? ...
It does get the Legend of Chun Li and Dragonball Evolution vibes at parts, which is definitely not a good sign, but it looks a lot darker which could bode well for a "realistic" Mortal Kombat movie.

Eek thought I was editting my previous post =/
Does "realistic" really make it better though? I get the dark and gritty if you're making Batman. But this is Mortal Kombat ... about an inter-dimensional fighting tournament hosted by a wizard who steals souls and attended by a god!
The base material doesn't really lend itself to realistic.

And that's why I brought up the other 2 movies which didn't come anywhere close to creating an entertaining movie because they tried to be realistic (or at least closer) when the base story just didn't work that way.
At worst I see this as something like The Tournament and probably at best I see this as something like a darker The Tournament...with Mortal Kombat characters to bring up nostalgia.
I hate how "dark" has come to be equated with realistic because it is not true at all and some movies and TV shows are taking it to ridiculous extremes that are far from anything that could even possibly be called realistic.

I didn't equate the two, but for a "realistic" Mortal Kombat movie and the demographics they are after to have a tournament with one survivor at the end it's gotta be dark. Don't forget that Mortal Kombat, at least the original video game, seperated itself from the other games by being dark and gory comparatively and I think for them that's the way to go.
However, I agree about some movies needing to dial it back but when The Dark Knight grosses what ever it did others are going to try and replicate it. I liked Iron Man more so than the Dark Knight because it was able to be realistic (again comparing it to other super hero movies like Spiderman 3 and Fantastic Four) without being too dark or even so serious with itself, like I laughed at the ending of the Dark Knight with that whole "I'm going to be the hero Gotham needs not wants" or whatever that speech was because it was just taking itself way to serious.
Anyways I guess since this might not even be a movie the discussion might be moot
