Just a question, but should the goal of an intervention (in whatever form it may take) be to gain gratitude and not have them angry with us (the West), or to save the lives of victims like this? I'm not a politician, so I care less about whether they like us than about saving the lives of innocents and avoiding further massacres. There are far better ways to justify not being involved than wanting to avoid some people on television screaming obscenities in Arabic toward us.
There is, of course, always realpolitik involved, but an intervention backed by Western nations in the form of money, food, etc., while Arab League nations and/or Turkey does the air and possibly ground work may not be seen as such a bad thing by the people there, so long as they can create a united opposition (which they've failed to do to date). It's not like they're burning American flags and Obama effigies in Libya after that action. As far as public opinion goes, that whole deal went fairly swimmingly.
