Bizarre incident in the SE today...

http://newsroom.calgary.ca/pr/calgar...ft-159343.aspx

Quote:
On Sunday, May 30, 2010, at approximately 5:50 a.m., a bus driver had parked his bus and left to use the facilities at a restaurant located in the 7200 block of 52 Street S.E.

Upon returning to the bus, he saw it was gone and called police immediately.
And some video of the two...

I assume the bus was left running? Doesn't make stealing it OK, but makes it a lot easier.

I thought that this only happened to people who leave their unlocked vehicle running with their infant inside while they just run in somewhere. "I can't believe my car was stolen!"

When transit drivers park their busses at a stop to quickly use the facilities/buy a coffee etc, yes they leave the busses running. I can't say one way or another if this is company policy, but I've seen it happen 9 times out of 10 when I rode the bus.

For the last 2 years though, I've only ridden train, so I don't know if the status quo is being maintained.

i'd wager it is company policy for maintenance reasons. for the amount of wear and tear those buses go though they probably want to avoid any unnecessary engine shutdowns and start ups

Am I the only one who found that awesomely funny?

Stealing a bus at 5:30am while totally hammered - that's a way to cap off a hell-uva night.

Just good that no one was hurt. Someone recklessly driving a bus could do some pretty sever damage, I should know as I play GTA.

Oh for sure.

Because they didn't smash anything or kill someone, I can feel safe in laughing at their actions.

I was just pondering why they'd be up at 5:50am until someone mentioned a cap to a night. That'd explain it. I'm not sure too many crooks would be getting up around 5:30 a.m.

The bus I routinely catch home has a driver that does some odd stuff. He pulls up to a crowd of about 30 people, purposefully parks about 10 feet from the crowd, opens the doors and then jogs to the rear door and exits. It's like a sociology experiment watching people go through the moral anguish of deciding if they're going to pay or not (most don't).

I can't say I've ever seen a driver turn the bus off to run into a store for a break.

I thought I read somewhere that they are allowed to keep the busses running for ~ 5 min like that if they need to go to the washroom, grab a quick drink, etc type of thing.

Having lived in multiple cities in Canada, leaving the bus running for a couple of mins here and there is not unique to Calgary.

I'm pretty sure those guys woke up at like 4 pm yesterday and were like:

"Dude, did we steal a bus last night?"

"Nawwwww..."

"Then how'd we get home?"

**looks out front window**

Busted!

They got one of 'em!

Police went to a home in the 6200 block of Penworth Road S.E., and arrested Jeffrey Keizer. The 20-year-old is charged with theft over $5,000.
Investigators are still looking for the suspect who was shown on video driving the bus.

I wonder if the police check out facebook profiles in a case like this when searching for an accomplice.

^ I'm sure they do. Hell, I'm sure they can obtain your cellphone contact list from your provider remotely.

Pretty dumb policy if so. Unnecessary idling is much harder on today's diesel engines than starting and stopping.
