Default Receiver Turns Off

I purchased a Yamaha receiver yesterday, hooked up the speakers (2 fronts, center and 2 ceiling rears). Everything worked fine this morning. Now it's turning itself off. I thought it was when the volume was too high but it seems to do it after about 5 - 10 seconds of being on.

I read it might be the speaker wires are touching. Before I pull it all apart I was hoping the CP braintrust had some ideas.

EDIT: I'm thinking the receiver can't handle the speakers.

Here are the details of the equipment:

My brother used to have a setup that worked fine and over time it began to shut off after being on less and less time. I can't remember how he figured it out but I think it was one speaker was pulling to much power and the receiver was shutting off to protect itself in the same way your breaker blows when you draw too much power.

I am pretty sure he just replace the speakers and wiring.

It could be over heating.

Rathji's explanation sounds likely.

Also, if the wires are touching then the impedance of the speaker at the receiver changes and that could also cause you some issues.

I had the same problem and instead of replacing the speakers and wiring, I replaced the receiver. I left the wiring and speakers exactly intact and my new receiver hasn't had any issues.

I'd agree with Rathji. Sounds like the amp is going into protect mode.

Is there a switch for speaker impedance on the back of the receiver? The last Yamaha I had could switch from 4 to 8 ohms. If yours is switched improperly that could be doing it too.

I used banana plugs once on my wires and the only way I could keep my receiver from shutting off when it got loud was to stop using them.

Rathji might be right. It appears to only happen when I turn up the volume past a certain point.

I redid the wiring to make sure nothing was touching.

I've been watching World Cup for about 30 minutes and no problems. Cranked the volume and to shut off. Put in a Blu-ray on my PS3 and it shut off fairly quickly. The display says "Decoder Off" when I use the PS3.

Your ps3 audio settings might be out of whack.
