Default Way to calculate distance on a map?

Is there a way to calculate distance on a map? I mean, aside from using the scale and ruler and trying to make a rough guess?

Is there some trick with Google Maps on how to do it? I can set a starting point and and end point and it will tell me the distance but it usually finds me the shortest route when I don't want the shortest route. I want a route that I specify.

You could just plug in the towns along your desired route and add up the distances.

Google Earth does has a very good one to measure the distance from anywhere to anywhere. You have to download Google Earth but if you do, just click on the ruler at the top and choose path.

Okay, I figured it out. You can just right click on the map and make a starting point, then set a waypoint along the desired route as the first destination. Then keep adding additional destinations as waypoints until you reach the end. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure in Mapquest you can change the route.

After you've set your starting and ending points in Google Maps you are able to move the route around to suite your needs.

Just in case anybody needs an "as the crow flies" distance calculator...

You'll note the centre of that projection is around 43° 40' 0 N, 79° 25' 0 W

I still find a standard Mercator projection the easiest to read, even if it is hooped toward the poles on a small scale map.

Someone brought up measuring straight-line distances in Google Earth... you actually can do that in Google Maps... click the Google Labs link at the top, and you can turn it on. Also, there's a 'rectangle drag' zoom tool, which kicks ass over the slider widget. The Lat/Long tooltip is also cool.

Whoa didn't see that. Thanks. Now if they could just add an updated map of Calgary. And a relief map would be nice instead of the terrain one.
