Default Build me a gaming PC

Hi,

I do not know a lot about hardware so lets build me a PC that will be able to play games like Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. Any brand of hardware is fine with me, I want to keep it around the $1000 range. Help me out CP!

Always a good place to start:

Anything you build today will run Starcraft 2.

I'm in a similar position as well at around $1000 without monitor/keyboard/mouse:

piecing together a desktop around the i7 930, and a XFX 5850 card.

looking at redflagdeals and NCIX

I see your $1000 budget, and raise you a $4000 budget!

Mmm... video games...

Edit: Whoops. I forgot to add a RAID card to stripe and mirror the 4x1TBs.

You need two more monitors for eyefinity. This 23" Dell has display port for $199.00

Hey good point. I'd still go with the Samsungs, though. They have a 2048 x 1152 resolution. For only $190 each, they're a steal.

Add two more of them to the total!

Screw eyefinity... get 3D Vision Surround. eyefinity + 3D. Of course, you'll need to switch to nVidia for that.

3D Vision surround hasn't been released yet and it's now May when cards were released in March.

Rumors are that it may never work properly as there is a hardware bandwidth limitation preventing it from working at higher resolutions - Nvidia's marketing department getting ahead of the engineering repartment.

Nvidia just changed the schedule so that the driver that was supposed to include this won't be released until summer but reports on the forums indicate that this won't even be included in that driver set.

3D Surround is vaporware just like how the GTX 470/480 was over 6 months late. Don't expect to buy Nvidia and be able to use multiple monitors for some time even though it's advertised on the box, it's false advertising.

Eyefinity is hardware solution built into one card. 3D Surround is a software solution Nvidia is tacking on to compete and requires two cards in SLI which doubles your cost as well as a resolution limitation and the fact that it's not even working at the moment and may not for several months.

ATI has drawbacks too, you'll need to buy displayport adapters if your monitor doesn't have a displayport.

Fair enough... but if it ever does come out it'll be awesome. Wasn't being entirely serious as I don't think Swayze11 is going to go for either one anyways.

Plus Starcraft 2 won't support triple monitors anyway do to the advantage you can get in multiplayer.

Processor is not that important for your gaming PC. Any multicore processor from the past 1-2 years will do. 4GB of ram should be plenty.

The most important consideration is the videocard.

What size monitor are you expecting to use?

For those serious about building, I'd suggest looking at the NCIX sales page Wed. evening. The best deals are snapped up quickly but I'm not sure anyone will be able to build a computer with i7 and a HD5850 for under a grand.

Here's something mostly from the sales page without price matching.

1.HD 5850 $330
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...anufacture=XFX

2. i7 860 quad core $310
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...l&promoid=1069

3.Gygabyte H57M LGA1156 $113
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...e&promoid=1069

4.Windows 7 HP 64 bit $106
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...t&promoid=1069

5.Western Digital Caviar Black 500gb $59
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...D&promoid=1069

6.Samsung DVD writer $24
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...g&promoid=1069

7. CPU heatsink (not sure if this will fit in case but it's cheap) $25
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s....&promoid=1069

8. Antec three hundred case $57
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...c&promoid=1069

9.Coolermaster 700W M PSU $76 after MIR
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...R&promoid=1069

10.OCZ Gold 4GB DDR3 $115 (not sure of compatibility with MB but it's cheap)
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...y&promoid=1069

Actually spend more and get this memory. It should be fine with the MB. $ 130 and runs at a lower voltage.
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...acture=G.Skill

Total $1230

I'd probably upgrade the MB to something like this for $144
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...nufacture=ASUS

Dropping the processor to an i5 will save about $80 and dropping to a HD5770 will save another $185 for a total under a grand.

I have a mac, I just want a gaming PC for Diablo 2 so I can quit me job and become a hermit.

Edit: Thanks a lot Vulcan. I would definatly upgrade the MB and and "buy" my OS in a different way.

Yes it should. I think OSX is supported for SC2 at least.
