Conservatives introduce mandatory sentencing for 5 marijuana plants
Since the 4/20 thread was so "fun", I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet. (Or if they did, I didn't see it. Sorry.)

Downloading, pot... they sure seem to like imposing disproportionate penalties for (mostly) harmless fun.
FWIW, I've never consumed marijuana beyond second-hand smoke, and I am against this bill.

Its not going to pass anyways. The conservatives will be able to go back to their core support and say we tried to be harder on drugs, but we couldn't push it through.
It ain't going to happen.

I'm not sure I get what the problem is. Growing marijiuana is part of drug traffiking no? Harsher penalties may help deter criminal and gang activities. Why would anyone be against this?

I don't know much about this stuff, so I'll ask some of the posters who know more... what's a reasonable number of plants for personal use? Yeah, I'm looking at you HOOT.
Basically, I couldn't care less if people grow for themselves, but if you've got a grow op, you're bringing all the associated criminal crap along with it, so you should go to gaol.

The disproportionate amount of resources (tax money) spent on something that has a very minimal effect on society.

Legalization would be a much better way of taking away from the drug dealers' earnings. Unfortunately, most politicians make decisions based on seemingly arbitrary criteria instead of any reasonable methods when it comes to drugs.

Because passing bills that make punishments stiffer does not have the desired effect. The harder and harder the government pushes on drugs the further under ground it gets. Look no further than the states for a country that spends ridiculous amounts on money to keep drugs out of their country and yet they still have a very huge drug issue down there.
If the government wanted to do something productive for once they would start regulating pot and underselling the dealers. You'd be taking money from drug dealers and gangs and putting it into tax payers pockets.

Growing five plants is not going to be enough to make any sort of profit for the person selling it. In all likelyhood is is entirely for personal use and will simply clog up the justice system with "criminals" who were a threat to society because they wanted to light up and grow a garden for personal use.

5 plants??
For some property owners in certain areas (B.C. for example), you could literally have 5 plants growing on your acreage unknowingly.....
Beside that, I am guessing that 5 plants sounds more like a personal crop and not for trafficking purposes..
