Default Boating in the Okanagan, WooHoo

How not to celebrate July 1st/4th weekend.

That accident shouldn’t have happened. You’re in a crowded area and you are going at high speed at night? You can’t do that,” he said.

Tragic. I can't imagine why someone would think it's a good idea to go that fast at night on a crowded lake.

I've been up to some high speeds on Lake Okanagan (100+ km/h), but I would never do it at night, or anywhere close to another boat/vessel.

This was on the Shuswap. The driver of this boat is obviously nuts. Outside my cabin where they do a fireworks display in Sicamous there are literally thousands of boats that watch. I couldn't imagine any boat taking off at the end of the display at a high speed. It should also be mentioned that it must have been pretty dark out too, I have no clue what this guy was thinking.

Okanagan as a region, as in the Okanagan like the thread title as opposed to, on the Okanagan as a particular lake.

I didn't think people were distinguishing between the Shuswap and the Okanagan. When I lived down there nobody knew the difference, the Okanagan went from Osoyoos to Sicamous.

I'll bet this guy is a dumb ass from the city, you can thank this guy for the big crackdowns that will now happen!

I am suprised more deaths don't happen there. I know I took a few years off my life when I went houseboating many moons ago. Get drunk 4 times per day for 5 days. Drowning hazards, food poisoning, alcohol poisoning, water craft stupidity, fights, venereal diseases.
Doesn't that imply you sobered up? Proper houseboating you should be drunk the entire time!

In Ontario they suspend your driver's licence for boating or floating @ .05 for 3-30 days if you can believe that BS.

.08 and over is 90 days automatic suspension and a year if convicted, and get this, the penalties for floating on an air mattress while impaired is the same as driving your car while impaired...

Boaters caught drinking and boating in Ontario will face the same penalties as those for drinking and driving.

That is crazy for floating. In alberta and BC if you are operating a boat under the influence it is the same as driving a car except for house boats. We were not told anywhere that there were rules to drinking and driving since you don't even need a boating licence to opperate

I'm heading out to that lake today. I'm not really surprised something like this happened. There are plenty of idiots out on the water ripping around hammered. On long weekends the water in some bays is crammed with houseboats. If someone forgot to turn on the lights its very easy to get hit at night. Last year someone was killed when their boat hit copper island at midnight.

Sad news, but not surprising at all.
I spent last summer in Kelowna and the amount of morons with fast boats is alarming.

another thing is when you rent a house boat you are told it is mandatory to dock them on a beach. Probably for this very reason
