Thumbs up Which "Big Shiny Tunes" was the best, and why?

Beginning in the second half of the 90's, these Muchmusic compilations defined what was new and cool in music during each of their release years.

I'm guessing this discussion will gravitate to numbers 1 through 5, as everyone knows after they started sucking after that (6 MIGHT be acceptable). It's no coincidence that Nickelback is on 7.

My nomination is Big Shiny Tunes 2 from 1997. The best compilation of 90's awesomeness ever.

Just try to tell me I'm wrong... (notice the 'edit' versions)

Prodigy - "Breathe (Edit)"
Blur - "Song 2"
Third Eye Blind - "Semi-Charmed Life"
Smash Mouth - "Walkin' on the Sun"
Sugar Ray - "Fly" (featuring Supercat)
Bran Van 3000 - "Drinking in L.A."
Marilyn Manson - "Beautiful People"
Holly McNarland - "Numb"
Bush - "Swallowed"
Matchbox 20 - "Push"
Collective Soul - "Precious Declaration (Remix)"
The Tea Party - "Temptation (Edit) (Tom Lord-Alge Mix)"
The Chemical Brothers - "Block Rockin' Beats (Radio Edit)"
Wide Mouth Mason - "My Old Self"
Radiohead - "Paranoid Android"
The Age of Electric - "Remote Control"
Stone Temple Pilots - "Lady Picture Show"

That transition from Blur to Third Eye Blind is less of a song change, more of a part 1 and part 2. You can't listen to one without the other. Then you have Sugar Ray FOLLOWED by Smash Mouth. To this day I believe this band is one and the same.

Drinking in LA is the centrepiece of this disc. Simply incredible. No need to elaborate.

Marilyn Manson could have been left off, but the song itself is great.

I could make a case for BST3 being the best as well, but it's a 'have to choose' scenario.

Research can be done here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Shiny_Tunes

Really hope someone else posts in this thread.

People getting nostalgic about the 90s officially means I'm old.

I would probably say #2 as well, but I still listen to the original Big Shiny Tunes to this day. It had a few gems on it...

I mother Earth - One more astronaut
Bush - Machinehead
No Doubt - Just a Girl
RHCP - Aeroplane
Sloan - Good in Everyone
Better than Ezra - King of New Orleans
Limblifter - Tinfoil
Foo Fighters - Alone and easy target
The Killjoys - Rave and Drool

It happens to everyone eventually. I'm 25, and we have a youngin' (14) helping out at work. I was trying to relate to him by talking about music. I told him I like Blink 182, and he used the terms "vintage" and "old school" to refer to them. At that moment I felt really old.

I'm gonna say 2 as well only because it has/had the best of everything there was to offer from the 90's. I think I wore out my original and ended up buying another.

#2 was my go-to compilation back in the day. Any album that started with the prodigy is golden.

That tracklist from #1 is quite strong as well though. Tough to pick a definite winner, but I'm giving it to #2 based on the amount I played it.

Easy. #2.

I didn't own #1. For some reason, it didn't call out to me. I did keep buying them every time they were released until #5 or #6. After #2, I found that each CD was slightly worse than the previous one.

I have to admit, my experience with MuchMusic as mostly revolved around watching female pop videos on mute with Metallica playing on my stereo.

You know... once in a while when I'm flipping through the channels and it suddenly looks like I've got some free all-girl interracial lesbian group porn... then I realize it's just another Beyonce video.

Edit: Not knocking the thread, though. That tracklisting from #2 looks pretty solid. I would have bought that at the time, had I known it existed.

Second edit: Incidentally... Anyone old enough to remember Mitsou videos? Damn...

I just looked it up and apparently they are still making these things, which I did not know. 14 of them now.

I have to agree, #2 was the definitive Big Shiny Tunes. It was my first CD. Honourable mention to #5.

I haven't actually watched Muchmusic in years. Last time I did though I thought they should call it "Some Music" since it was mostly reality shows or list shows and not really a whole lot of actual music going on.

They were all bad. The 90s is my least favorite era for music. The songs and bands from Big Shiny 90s that I actually like are actually bands from the 80s and some of the songs are from 1989.
