Final Fantasy XIII Thread
Just noticed this morning that Best Buy is doing pre-orders for this game now with an estimated release date of March 9
http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...22&catid=24362
I've always been a fan of the series; my first FF game being the starter RPG Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest on the SNES.
From what I've read about this game so far is it's quite a bit different from previous installments. For instance you only control one person while in combat. Apparantly the game is very linear in nature as well.
Seeing as its the first FF game for next gen systems (it'll be available for PS3 and 360 this time) I'm pretty sure I'll be buying it, no matter what the reviews say.
What are your opinions on this game so far? Will you be buying it?

FF3 (or 6... whatever you want to call it) for the SNES was the only one in the series I was every really able to get into. Any other standouts that are worth playing?

If you haven't played FF7 before, it really is one of the greatest games. The graphics would look really dated now, but if you value gameplay > graphics you would really enjoy it. FF9 is a fun one. It was the last one released on the PS1 (I think only 6 months maybe before the PS2 was released) and it's a throw-back to more old-school RPG elements. FF7 and 8 were more futuristic themed.
I'm assuming you would be playing these on an emulator of some sort?

Thanks for the advice. The focus shift towards graphics and away from gameplay is what's made me kick the video game habit over the last decade but I've recently been messing around with some old retro titles and abandonware.
Yea, most likely on an emulator. There was a PC version for FF7, no? Was it any different? Just as good?

I've never played the PC version, but found this in Wikipedia:
Quote:
In 1998, Final Fantasy VII was ported to Windows-based PCs. This re-release featured smoother graphics and fixed translation and spelling errors, as well as gameplay-related glitches. However, the PC version also suffered from its own bugs, including errors in the display of some full motion videos when rendering in hardware mode on certain graphics chipsets.[
|
I would probably try finding an emulator version first. But ya, give it a try, I'm sure you would like it.

Last weekend I recorded the endings of FFI, FFII, FFIII & FFIV to DVD.
I lost all my save games to FFV, so I'm playing that now.
Of the main series, FFVI is my favorite, seconded by FFVII. But FFT is in my top 5 games of all time....
I'm gonna record the endings of every game to DVD before starting XIII.

I'm not a huge RPG fan, but these games are always nice to look at. Actually I quite enjoyed FF7 back in the day. Couldn't get past the first disc though.
This might be worth getting just to experience its beauty in the high def generation.

I'm pretty excited about the game. It's been what, 5 years in the making? I've been an JRPG whore since I first played Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy on the NES. In fact, I think I have 3 copies of FF1, the original NES version, the PS1 remake, and the GBA remake.
I must say, I was a little put off by the direction FFXII went though. I didn't enjoy the battle system all that much, and the story was a bit lacking IMO. I'm hoping FFXIII redeems the series for me with a kick butt story.
So far, FFXIII looks visually stunning, but after reading some reviews, I don't know how I feel about the battle system, or some of the characters. I guess I'll find out come March 9.

I'm a fan of the series. Love FFVII. Looking forward to this one. I hope its good, since its been a long time since I really immersed myself into an FF game, not since 7 on the original PS.

FF3 on a emulator is very worth it, had glitch problems on every version and console that FF7 has been on, never got past first disc.
FF13 looks pretty good, very limited views so far thouhg

Bumping the thread as the game comes out tomorrow. It got an 8.5 / 10 in the Gamespot review.

The game should be priced at $59.99 according to Friday's flyers. Also, according to the reviews it appears as thought the PS3 version is slightly better so if you have both consoles you might want to go that route.

Went in around 11:30 and picked up a copy at Future Shop NE. They had a pile of copies for both consoles.
I went PS3 route because I heard the video is uncompressed HD and fits on a single dual layer Bluray as opposed to multiple DVD's for the 360 version. I hate switching discs...

I've also read that the game was created as a PS3 game, and then ported to the 360. Apparently the PS3 version has higher resolution too.

Yes, the PS3 version has been confirmed to have a higher resolution, and look a lot better ingame and in cutscenes.
I picked my copy up today, but can't play this until 10:30 tonight
