Default Fake Paypal email going around.

There is a fake Paypal email going around! Make sure if you get one, if it doesn't match what it says on this website, it's probably fake.

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/fraud-prevention-outside

I got one this morning. First of all, it used the "Dear Valued Paypal Customer". Second, the email it came from was @paypel.com. Third, it told me I had to complete what they were asking on or before TODAY and the email just came today. Also, I don't even have a paypal account!

But I thought I would share with CP.

Also, I emailed spoof@paypal.com, and they informed me that is definitely looks like a phishing attempt and they are working to fix the fraud. But like I said, it's always good to inform others about these things!

The first run-on sentence is a giveaway too.

Exclamation points in an e-mail subject line aren't all that common for official company correspondence. Doubly so for automated reminder e-mails.

If you mouse over the link (do NOT actually click on it) where does it want to take you?

It's strange, the pointer disappears in that email and I just have the hand that shows up when you hover over the link. It's like I could click the entire email (which usually isn't the case). The address that shows up in the bar at the bottom of the page had "blocked" in it as well, and did NOT have paypal.com or anything like that.

I would fill this messageboard if I posted every possible scam e-mail I receive daily.

Thanks for warning others though, as I'm sure there's a few folk on here still surprised by this stuff.

If it's a telemarketer, call the company's listed general line.
If it's via email, go via the basic web address.

How are they not smart enough to at least hide the papel.com part?

True enough, but a reminder for everyone once in a while never hurts. And also like you said, there are definitely people being surprised every day I bet!

It would be hilarious if it was papal.com.
