wranglers CPHL Future Watch: Atlantic Division

No introduction is needed, you know what it is. But changing it up a bit this year. Will do rankings based on division, in the end will compile all teams together for one jumbo ranking. The timing is great, no player movement is happening therefore this could be the future of the future watch.

Drum roll for the Atlantic Division:

1. – Jeff Young
1. Viktor Hedman
2. P.K. Subban
3. Peter Holland
4. Louis Leblanc
5. Evgeny Grachev
6. Max Pacioretty
7. Simon Despres
8. Charles-Oliver Roussel
9. David Fischer
10. Aaron Palushaj

Last years number two overall is this years number one in the Atlantic Division. There is no doubt about the talent in Penguins prospect pool, but how long they take to get their will be the question due to Penguins superiors CPHL depth. P.K. Subban is the big riser from last year, moving from ninth on the list to second on the list this year. Only four prospects from last years list remain with the franchise this year, with Carey Price graduating to the senior Pens.

Safest Prospect: Viktor Hedman - With the size and skill Hedman possess it is going to be natural for him to dominate the competition in the near future.

Boom-Bust: P.K. Subban – Subban as mentioned took great strides in the last year but he still remains a suspect prospect who can great be offensively and become a leader or become a defensive liability.

Future: The Penguins are showing no signs of slowing down, controlling another three first round selections in the next CPHL draft, one of them being the second overall. As they say, the rich get richer.

2. – Mike Beauchamp
1. Tyler Myers
2. Jonathan Bernier
3. Brayden Schenn
4. Jordan Caron
5. Kyle Palmeiri
6. Chet Pickard
7. Mike Weber
8. Carter Ashton
9. T.J. Brodie
10. Phillipe Paradis

The Islanders are on a rise and it’s due to their new man in charge. GM Beauchamp took over this club last off-season and made youth injection a priority. Last year this group ranked second last in the league and this year they’re second in a prospect heavy division. Only T.J. Brodie makes a repeat appearance with Niklas Hjalmarsson graduating.

Safest Prospect: Brayden Schenn – Even though Tyler Myers looks to be on a great path to stardom, to me Schenn is a player that will provide a solid two-way game for number of years to come.

Boom-Bust: Jonathon Bernier – Bernier has looked great in the minors but still has to prove it at the highest level. He is the future goaltender of the Island but how long he takes to develop remains to be seen.

Future: The Islanders finished a disappointing season in the CPHL but that was expected, for their efforts they obtain another top 5 pick. Along with that, they have three other selections in the second round. The Islanders will look to address their defensive side of the pool. The pool is growing and the future might be sooner than predicted.

3. – Joe Schum
1. Colin Wilson
2. James Howard
3. Kirill Petrov
4. John Moore
5. Jonas Gustavsson
6. Ondrej Pavelac
7. Andrei Loktionov
8. Andre Petersson
9. Chris Brown
10. Matthew Corrente

The Flyers last year finished third overall in the league, this year they’re just third in their own division, meaning they slipped a bit. Only one prospect from last years list remains in the organization, Derrick Brassard, who graduated to the pros.

Safest Prosepect: Colin Wilson – Wilson might not be a point per game player in the CPHL but his size, strength, skill and vision will allow him to be a key part of the Flyers moving forward.

Boom-Bust: Andrei Loktionov – After a tremendous junior career, Andrei fit in well with the AHL club, unfortunately a shoulder injury cut short his season. The skill and the drive are there but he lacks size, which can be his downfall.

Future: The Flyers will look to boost the prospects pool with two top six selections in the upcoming draft. They also have another selection in the 20s. If those picks are not moved the Flyers will look to strengthen their defense.

4.: – Steve R.
1. Mattias Tedenby
2. Jared Cowan
3. Zach Kassian
4. Ryan O Reilly
5. Thomas McCollum
6. Christopher Didomenico
7. Brad Marchand
8. Kenny Ryan
9. Ryan Bourque
10. Lance Bouma

The Devils look to continue building a strong foundation. Last year the Devils finished 15th in the league. Even though this years group is stronger than the previous years they still dropped behind the Islanders. It’s no knock on the Devils, the Islanders have done a great job building their own pool. The Devils gambled and traded Matt Duchene and in return they have Mattias Tedenby and Zach Kassian to display in these rankings. The forwards look great for the future but the defense needs to be looked at.

Safest Pick: Ryan O’Reilly – O’Reilly will not give you ton of points but he will provide a steady two-way game and will work the penalty kill. Lance Bouma is a similar player; look for him to have a similar impact.

Boom-Bust: Zach Kassian – A player with huge potential but can very easily fail as well. He needs to stay focused and play to his strengths, if he manages to accomplish that than he’s future great for the Devils otherwise could end in the minors.

Future: Similar to the other Atlantic Divisions teams, the Devils also have multiple good high value picks. The Devils have two top five picks, including the top overall pick, which can be used to strengthen the defense and grab a franchise player.

5. – Jeff Philipoff
1. Alexander Vasyunov
2. Adam Henrique
3. Bill Sweatt
4. Mikhail Stefanovich
5. Philip Larsen
6. Brayden McNabb
7. Patrick Maroon
8. John Armstrong
9. Ben Ryan
10. Brett Sterling

The Rangers last year were 13th in the league. This year they finished last in the division, due to some of their top prospects graduating, namely Patric Hornqvist and Cal Clutterbuck. In a division full of teams with great prospects and multiple high value picks the Rangers are not one of them, the only one. Although it is going to be difficult moving out of the basement, their GM knows and understands the game so it can be done.

Safest Pick: Adam Henrique – Not the greatest ceiling but it’s the attention to detail that makes Henrique a safe pick. He has the ability to play a great defensive game but also chip in offensively.

Boom-Bust: Alexander Vasyunov – The top prospect in the Rangers system, Alexander has the skill set but lacks consistency. He likes to shoot the puck and can become a dangerous scorer. However, he is also knocked for his skating, he has to overcome these issues to become a boom prospect.

Future: The Rangers first pick in the upcoming draft isn’t till the fourth round. There is no doubt GM Philipoff will have to get creative and obtain some earlier picks and re-build the prospects pool in order to remain competitive long term.

UP NEXT: SOUTHEAST (NEXT WEEK)

It's hard to take an objective look at your own team, but I think you've done quite well. It'll be interesting to see if any can bump Grant off the top of the heap, but I like the divisional idea.

Great work.

The Atlantic Division has probably the deepest pool of prospects in the league. Philly could easily be #1 in another division, well except for Grant's division.

I also think the Devils and Isles deserve props for having the patience to rebuild; their teams are better off this year because of it.
