WTF - My Plasma Just Died?
It clicked off and back on like there was an electrical surge. 10 mins later off/on again then off and I can't do anything with it (tried the obvious stuff like checking fuse box and turning the surge protector off an on). It's only 3 years old and not much used. Just did some sort of click again but won't come back on.... Anyone else have any experience with this? Of course, Hitachi's customer service is closed for the night...

Try unplugging it from the wall for a few seconds and see if that helps. Chances are that there is some sort of fuse or surge protection built into the unit that has tripped, but I couldn't tell you exactly where it is.
You mentioned you have a surge protector. Make sure that it hasn't been tripped - there is usually some sort of button that has popped out.
Good luck!

What kind of tv? Lcd?
If it's one of the big ones(rear projection?)that require a bulb you probably need a new one and they are pretty expensive.

It's a Hitachi Plasma. It seems to be stuck in "stanby" mode - I am guessing internal surge protector triggered - have no clue how to re-set it. Nohing in the manual beyond "try turning POWER stitch off/on; if that doesn't work unplug/plug and turn POWER on".

Are there not power surges/bumps/blips happening all over town tonight? Down south in Okotoks there are and I would think that could have tripped something in your TV.

Take a look in the manual. Sometimes there's a fuse in the tv itself that can be replaced.

I found this in a manual pdf:
TROUBLESHOOTING Your HITACHI Plasma Television incorporates advanced power surge protection technology designed to protect
against component or circuit damage due to external or internal voltage power surges.
IF YOUR TELEVISION SHOULD APPEAR TO HAVE A LOSS OF POWER, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS
PROCEDURE: 1. Press the POWER
SWITCH (ON/OFF
SWITCH) once.
2. If there is still no power,
wait 30 seconds and
press the POWER
SWITCH again.
3. If there is still no power,
unplug the power cord
from the wall. Wait 30
seconds and plug the
power cord back in.
Press the POWER
SWITCH again.
This protective technology
should provide for years of
lasting entertainment from
your HITACHI Plasma
Television.

Looks like there's two fuses, one internal, and one on the power supply board. Either one of those could be blown, and should still allow the standby light to come on.

Yep, so I guess I have to open it up and replace the internal fuse? Any guesses as to cost?

I had something similar to that happen where the T.V. would turn on and off, and eventually stayed off.
They replaced a heat sink that was to small (manufacturer design problem) and was causing heat issues.

This happened to my Hitachi Plasma 2 years ago (Had it for 3). It was the circuit board or something and the Hitachi tech said $1000 to fix it because it was no longer under warranty.
I never picked it back up and bought a new one Samsung from BB for less than that.
Unfortunately, these TV's are built to break and they want you buying new ones rather than fixing it for cheap.

I had a problem like this before as well, but with my Samsung LCD. I was getting prepared to replace the TV at a substantial cost, and went online to look at the different brands available. While I was doing this, I stumbled across a Youtube video of a Samsung with the same power up problems I had, and then another video of a guy actually fixing the problem. Turns out it was a very common problem, and the solution was to open the TV up and replace 4 capacitors that had blown. Seeing as the capacitor fix was ~$6, and the TV was already broken (couldn't break it any worse), I spent the hour at the electronics store, followed by 30 min fixing the TV, and now it's totally fixed, no problem.
My point - even if you do replace your TV, check out Youtube to see what you can do to repair it. TV repair - with the right instructions - is actually pretty easy.

No protector?
My bedroom unit for sat and plazma (about $55.00)
http://www.hd.ca/monster/mpht200.php
My home theater unit (about $250.00)
http://www.hd.ca/monster/mphts1000mkiii.php
Never ever run a plazma without a surge protector! In most instances with a large power surge the damage is to the plazma display itself and the powersupply is left alone, also don't just protect the electrical but get a protector that has coaxial protection as well, lightning strikes on a house or even a neighbours house come threw cable lines/sat lines.

A $29 model will do just as well as those monster cable ones.
Add in some coaxial surge protectors, the ones used in industry only cost $5 each.

Monster Cable, always and ever the 1000% mark-up.
