It still has one more hurdle, but Dubya's lack of environmental policy p*sses me off.

I wouldn't mind this if it was rationally combined with something like strict limits on car emissions or mandated fuel efficiency. Why not look to reduce demand on oil at the same time as increasing supply? I don't mind using petroleum products, but there's got to be a slightly more productive way to go about using them.

Also, do they already know exactly where the oil and gas is? I know they often have to explore for this stuff, and test-drilling might be pretty invasive on its own. Any oil and gas Exec's here who can walk us through it?

i think dubya might be doing this reluctantly, i mean there are plenty of reserves off the coast of louisiana and plenty of rigs to rebuild in the gulf of mexico that will fill more short-term need of oil.

high oil prices need the myth of 'peak oil' - the idea that there isn't that much of it around when in fact there is a colossal amount of unproven reserves, which if even a little bit true-blue, means mega oil.

this 'peak-oil' thing is huge with conspiracy nuts, who see oil as a way that the rich countries and families rule the world.

there is plenty of oil that is tappable without ravaging alaskan wilderness, there is no reason whatsoever of this development.

he isn't reluctant at all. He's been trying to get this done for years. Instead of pulling this crap, he should be mandating lower emissions from vehicles, etc.

Thomas Friedman of the NY Times seems to think that drilling in Anwar is dumb as well, though for surprising reasons. He theorizes that the people this oil will go to are not Americans, but the Japanese and Chinese. Friedman argues that this is playing into Chinese hands.

He advocates a buck a gallon gas tax to start pushing towards a 'geo-green' strategy. I used to hate this guy... now I don't know what to think

Agree on the latter Habby, but it is the people of Alaska and their elected representatives who have been pushing for this very, very hard.
