Alrighty everyone, a friend is having a birthday shindig at the end of the month. It's a theme dress night, with that theme being the 1940s/big band swing style of dress. So...I must find myself the most garishly-colored zoot suit available for rental in this fair city.

Where the hell should I look? What's a good cost?

HELP.

Most Costume shops have these. I rented one 3 years ago for about 70 bucks for the night. Pretty cool. If you're in Calgary "Masque" is where I got mine.

Just what I thought. My thanks to you, kind sir. I shall be the most garishly dressed gentleman at the ball.

Any cool zoot suit wouldn't make it to the Salvation Army. Something like that would have been scooped by a "hipster" second hand store so try the good second hand stores and maybe you'll get lucky.

That is kind of unlikely though.

Try costume shops or even tux rental places but be prepared to pay through the nose. I wanted to rent a zoot suit as part of a costume more than 10 years ago and it was $99 plus shoes and all that other crap.

Or depending on your size maybe you could go buy the biggest, ugliest suit jacket you can find and get it altered then just wing it with the pants and a cheap fedora. Try to find some old two-tone golf shoes, take out the spikes and you are homefree.

Or if that is too much work play dumb and say you thought it was a "swingers" theme and dress up like a 70's wifeswapper. Start growing that moustache today!

EDIT: apparently Mr. Hrdina is a better bargain hunter than me

I can't help you with the search, but I did just have an epiphany of sorts.

Remember in the movie Back to the Future (see my sig), when Doc scolds Marty for being late getting to the clock tower for the "science experiment"? Doc says "you're late!!".
Marty replies "HEY, I had to change. I'm not going back in that..."

I thought he said "suit suit". Now, I realize that he says "zoot suit".

Thanks to cp.com, I now know what a zoot suit is.
