What a joke, because a few natives raise the racist flag people go ape and bow down to them. I'm sure 95% of natives are fine with it but everyone bows down to the few that complain.

The group bringing the challenge was Sioux, they don't want the name to go. But I guess a bunch of guys (likely largely upper class white guys) in an NCAA board room are in a better position to say what's offensive to the Sioux.
If the second tribe had simply let its people decide this could all have been avoided, or at least decided with certainty, but tribal politics are rarely left in the hands of the actual members it seems.

I would be proud if my heritage was thought of as a sports name. Not sure who would name there team the Whitey Mutts of Saskatchewan though?

I don't really find the names offensive... though I suppose if you support those teams keeping those names you should have no problem with a new franchise like the "Toronto Whiteskins" starting up in the NFL.
The issue as I see it mostly revolves around the fact that, back when they were naming these teams, it was acceptable to use "Chiefs", "Redskins", "Braves", "Indians". I don't think those sort of names would be used for new/expansion teams these days though.

Redskins (which I assume your example is based from) and a name like Fighting Sioux are completely different things. UND has made a commitment to including the Sioux in decisions about logos and image, the whole point is to honor the heritage of the region. Of the 2 Sioux tribes in the region the only one that was permitted to vote on the name/logo approved of it.

Isn't "Indians" a more accepted term in the United States than it is in Canada?

Other way around, I think. An American on this forum got all pissy with me once for referring to natives as "Indians", despite the fact that up here it's called the Indian Act and just as many reserves classify themselves as an "Indian reserve" as they do a "native reserve."

You know, as a white person, I find the term Snow Day offensive.
Do something about it world.

I don't see much of a difference between things like "Chiefs" and 'braves" versus "generals" "patriots" and "Blue Jackets".

They didn't mention the Bureau of Indian Affairs did they? Doens't have anything to do with administering to people from India.
Indians has long been the common nomenclature in the US. It's starting to change, as it should, to Native Americans. It is amazing how much effect Christopher Columbus' ineptness has had on American culture!

I guess i'm just sick of people complaining all the time. We can't say Merry Christmas anymore, the lords prayer is frowned upon, we have to change sports teams names, you can build a house on the land that my people owned four hundred years ago and sold it to the gov't but the gov't ripped us off so i'm going to petition. Just sick of it all. How about spend your time on positive things and try to make the world better.
