Question Bumping Old Threads

There is a weird trend on CP I don't understand.

Any time someone bumps a thread that is more than about a week old they seem to get crap from all the other posters.

Yet if someone starts a new thread they get attacked for creating a thread when a million other ones exist just like it.

How do the mods feel about this?

Obviously bumping a 2 year old thread to say "you were wrong" is moronic but I don't see any problem with bumping a thread that is older to continue debate. Especially for users who weren't around 2 years ago and didn't join in on the original thread.

It depends on why the thread was bumped, how many other threads like that are active. For the most part any thread that hasn't had a new post for about a month and some new news, or information comes out that related to that thread there should be a new thread started, and the old thread should be referenced with link in the new thread.

For the fire on ice forum, it's better to keep things a bit more current and reference the old thread. When you have the number of threads that forum gets, it can be a mess if every month old thread kept getting bumped all the time. Even if it is on topic and something new comes out 6-7 weeks later, it's better to start a new discussion and reference the old one.

People who bump old threads to say I told you so should be auto banned for 30 days!

Personally I would rather see the old thread bumped if the person is actually going to add something to the topic and not just some lame one liner to say I told you so or whatever. Sometimes you miss a thread and when it gets bumped with new info I like to go back and get caught up on the background of it for the most part.
