Default PC Laptop Keeps Waking From Sleep While in Bag

Wtf, that's twice now in less than a week. The crazy thing, is I even wiped and re-installed Windows over the weekend.

Last week, I closed the lid on my laptop and waited for the light to blink to indicate sleep mode, then put it in my backpack and left. I stopped for supper on the way home, so my laptop was sitting in my car inside my backpack for close to 90 minutes. When I got home, I left my bag sitting in the living room for another hour before pulling it out...

Anyway, when I opened the bag, I heard the fans on my laptop roaring... I pulled it out and it was like I was pulling it out of an oven. The friggin thing had woken up from sleep mode sometime while it was in my bag.

Same thing again today, I wait for the light to blink, go to class, pull it out of my backpack, and again it's on and the fans are running.

What the heck is waking this thing up? Is this some sort of known issue with Windows 7 or something? The laptop is a dell and is less than 3 months old.

How long did you set before it goes from sleep mode to hibernation mode?
That might be what's setting it off.

For me, sometimes the computer starts to go into hibernation mode but something weird happens and it fails to go into hibernation.

Hmmm. I don't know. It's whatever the default settings are for the "High Performance" profile.

Is it supposed to go into hibernation if you let it sleep for too long? It was only in my backpack for 10 minutes this morning.

Yah, for some reason my laptop does that too, and I have no idea why. It would turn on in the middle of the night while I'm sleeping and then I only notice it when I wake up. Is it because Windows is running some sort of update?

You might want to adjust your power scheme if it isn't set to Laptop/Portable.....do you use a docking station for this laptop? Mine used to do the same thing if I didn't fully shut it down before throwing it into the bag.

I checked my power settings and "Hibernate after..." is set to Never for both with and without ac power. My "Close Lid" action is set to sleep with or without ac power too.

I wonder if there's some background service that is trying to run and forcing Windows to wake.

Are you running Windows 7?

I'm getting the same problems. I'll put my computer on sleep then I'll put it in my bag then I hear the fan running. It just happens for me when I move the computer... I think.

Yeah, Windows 7.

Hmm... My laptop does have an accelerometer in it... That can't possibly be it, though. Surely someone would consider the possibility of a laptop being moved around while in sleep mode.

A bluetooth mouse waking the system from sleep is one possible culprit, if you have a bluetooth mouse of course.

Try this...

http://www.cravingtech.com/fix-windo...by-itself.html

Quote:
To find out what event/device woke up your Windows from its sleep state, go to command prompt (type cmd on the Run/Search box and press ENTER), then type this:

powercfg –lastwake
It didn't work for me... maybe it's because I just turned off my computer.

I am pretty sure that wireless will do this with Wireless Zero Configuration Service running. Depends on your set up though.

Most desktop BIOSes have a setting to wake on network activity, not sure about laptops though. You might want to check in there and see.

So I ran that powercgf command, but I'd already rebooted since it happened so it had no record of a lastwake. Nevertheless, I played around with some of the options for that command, and produced a list of all devices on my laptop that have the ability to wake it from any form of sleep.

Of course, the list is incredibly obscure so I had to also produce a list of EVERY device on my laptop to try and figure out what they are...

Anyway, here are the lists:

As I recall, the "hibernate on lid close" toggle in Power Options also controls the "wake on lid open" functions as well (at least it used to). If you completely disable the lid action option (set to 'do nothing'), it should take out the possibility that the lid sensor gets jostled in your backpack and triggering the 'wake' command inadvertently.

(YMMV - this fixed a similar problem with an old Dell D-series Inspiron I had. I don't suppose there's a like 'lid open wake command' tucked in the BIOS somehwhere?)

Just throwing this out there but I have no idea if it will help. Check the Event Viewer under Administrative Tools in the control panel. It might give you a clue as to what might have happened at the time it turned on.

Tested the wireless mouse theory already. Also went digging in the event viewer but I don't know where to look for this type of thing, and the feedback it gives for various things isn't usually very friendly anyway.

I've decided to just change the lid action to hibernate instead of sleep. The thing woke up on me again earlier this afternoon, but hibernate should fix it since it actually kills all power.

I think the more important question is why the hell do you have a PC Laptop?
