Default Rogers / Fido: Current tethering policy to continue forever!

Quote:
Effective immediately, tethering will continue to be included at no additional charge for Rogers and Fido customers who subscribe to data plans of 1 GB and above (excluding those listed below). This effectively makes our current promotion (which was set to expire on May 3) our ongoing policy.

This is great news, I've used it before and it's super convenient, but haven't really got it in my mind as a permanent solution to situations because it was always going to go away.. Now I don't have to worry!

One thing that Rogers/Fido has done that makes me happy.

Would it be worth it to get a large data plan and use a tethered smartphone as a source for internet at home?

If all you do is get email and browse the odd website maybe, but it's still not all that fast.

And keep in mind that while it requires quite a bit of work to use up 1GB of data on a phone, it would be MUCH easier to use that in one month on a computer.

Heck a game demo download can be far past 1GB.

There is a way to tether on a 500mb plan, and it doesn't even require jailbreaking. Try googling it.

I use mine a fair bit when I am in hotels, and the speed surprised me, certainly better than many hotels. And the only time I have problems using too much data is when I try to watch a Flames game via iphone tethering.
