Default Athabaska River

Looking for information anyone might have on a real nice place along the river. I know little about it. What I do know:

1200km long
travels from Jasper to Wood Buffalo National Park

I am familiar with the falls in Jasper national park, but does anyone know of a nice piece of river other than that.

Maybe near Whitecourt or Athabaska?

Fulfilling family members desire to have ashes spread on the river. Keep in mind may have a dozen or two family members in tow, some elderly. So accessability a key.

How about right at the headwaters? The Beautiful Colombia icefields?

We live about 2kms from the Athabasca near Smith....there are some plenty of nice spots aways in the bush and are easily accessable by quad trails.

Did you know that they will sink to the bottom right away... I mean absolutely no disrespect, nor am I trying to be funny... But some people have an expectation that they will peacefully float away like in the movies - the reality is they sink basically immediatly so sometimes it is a surprise and uncomfortable/disapointing... The term ashes is a bit misleading. That being said I hope you find the perfect spot - we used to go fishing out by Whitecourt and there are some really nice accesable spots but that was a long time ago so cant provide much more than that...

First of all, I have never seen it spelled with a 'k' and I've been living here for 5 years.

I live near the Town of Athabasca, which is right on the river as it veers northward and continues towards Lake Athabasca (which is several hundred kilometers north). I would recommend you do not come to the Town of Athabasca to enjoy the river.

A really good spot to enjoy the river is the Whitecourt area. So around Whitecourt or in Jasper would be a nice place to lay some ashes.

Thanks all. I thought it looked funny when I typed it with a "k".

No we have no romantic notions of the ashes floating away, it is just the river itself that he wanted the final ... whatever ... to occur at. So we just wanted a pleasant enough spot that the family who want to come can enjoy.

Quad trails etc. won't really work for the elderly coming out. They need non "roughing it" accommadation close by. Looks like Whitecourt or Jasper I guess.

Thanks again for the information.
