Flames Grooveshark - The new Napster?

http://listen.grooveshark.com/

You can search pretty much any song you can think of and listen to it in its entirety online. You can add them to your online favorites and playlists, etc., but to download them, you have to purchase through iTunes or Amazon.

A really interesting development in online music... Signing up is free, but you don't need to do this to listen to music.

Edit: Not sure if it's been posted before. At least, not as its own topic.

It was somewhere in the tech talk forum, but it deserves it's own thread I think.

It's a pretty damn cool music player, that's for sure. It's nice to be able to make a sweet party mix or whatever, save it to your profile, and voila! Anywhere you go where there's internet, you have access to all your mixes. Makes for a very easy party soundtrack.

That being said, I found it did take a little bit of time to get used to. I had to screw around with it for a while before I really got the hang of it.

I'd look into Hypem as well if I were you. It's another online music thing, but it looks at what music has been newly released/is being blogged about. It deals more in electronic and remixed stuff though.

I like this. It seems very quick and the way the player is organized is very convenient.

Pretty awesome. $3 a month to remove ads (although NoScript already does that) and have access to the mobile app isn't bad either. I feel like this is too good to be true or stay in business.

This thing is exactly what I needed. I feel so out of touch with good music living in a place like I do up in NE China. Listening to a lot of the stuff on here makes me miss the old lifestyle I had in Shanghai and the days of clubbing, lounges and being surrounded by style. There is nothing very new or interesting where I'm at now.

I've been delighted with this for quite some time. It's so useful at work when I just need to plug in and focus. I can cue up like 4 hours of music in a few seconds! My taste in music is pretty eccentric but they have a little of everything.

I just found some live, previously unknown, versions of songs I love. This is great. Thanks

Grooveshark is effin sweet. Way better than Last.fm

I'm very impressed with their song selection too. They've got tons of songs Last.fm never played on their e-radio

It pretty much is. The songs are user uploaded, which puts it in some dubious legal territory. They have a licensing deal with EMI, but I'm guessing the other big labels would rather litigate than lincense their stuff. Plus their business model depends on selling enough to pay royalties on streaming. Good luck with that.

GrooveShark is a very cool service.

It's always bugged me when someone goes to YouTube to listen to music. I've been using GrooveShark as a way to discover other songs from some of my favourite artists.

I think EMI backed out of the licensing agreement.

I don't think it will stay up for long. They don't have the agreements in place to keep operating like they are.
