Has some demo videos. I'm a little disappointed with it, no multi-touch kills it for me. Was also hoping they'd have google voice/VOIP integration so the phone could function using only data.
Also, it says it's unavailable in Canada.

So could you buy it unlocked, bring it to canada and hook it up to rogers? My buddy was looking at it and getting very excited, then the price and unavailability kind of took the wind out of his sails. I'm trying to get him on the iphone wagon, but he's a linux user and says it's horribly annoying.

Should work if you do it that way. One thing i'm unsure about is they said it works on T-mobile's 3G network but not AT-T's network. Since the iphone is out on rogers/fido and AT-T (originally), i suspect they uses the same bands, so the nexus one might not be 3G compatible on our networks (haven't looked at which bands they use, so not sure, just a guess).

The thing is not very attractive, very generic and bland.

Saw an interesting blog post today that raised the question: beyond being distributed by google and having the latest OS, what does this phone do that the other 40 or so android phones won't? Pulling that number out of my ass, I don't know the actual number. It just seems that this phone has generated a ton of publicity despite not actually doing anything original. Am I completely missing something here?

Disappointing release by Google.
The next phone not to look like an iPhone will probably be the next iPhone.

Does not look like an iPhone. Has multi-touch. Does everything else the Nexus One does. Verizon. Win.
Coming soon to you Canadians.

Looks too much like a phone. It would be like I'm going backwards in order to go forwards. One of the things I like about the iPhone is that it doesn't really look like a phone at all. It looks more like what it really is: a small, portable, touchscreen computer.

I was pretty excited for this but I'm left a little disappointed. One device that has increasingly been attracting my interest though is the Nokia N900.

Then I got into Blackberries, and I started to really dislike commercial phones. Not from an elitist standpoint, just because it all seemed like such a waste of time to screw around with a Moto or Samsung or whatever, when I could accomplish so much more with my BB! I mean, I could EMAIL PEOPLES!!
Anyway, I always hated how (even though I loved the funrionality) all BBs essentially looked the same as all the other ones. Different sizes and colours but still the same thing. Which, of course, is why I flipped out when the iPhone was first announced. All the functionality of my BB (and more) without just being another brick with buttons on it! I'm pretty sure there were a few more people who thought that same thing too...
So long story short, better... But still no.

Funny that the one feature most BB people love is an immediate turn off for me. Having a touch keyboard is just infinitely more appealing to me. Physical keyboards in my eyes just add bulk to a phone and offer more parts that can break.
I'm happy to see the Nexus go that route, but beyond that I'm not entirely impressed. The fact that the Nexus' coolest feature (the new firmware) will be on all the other android devices is a bit of a scene stealer from this announcement.
I'm really hoping 2010 brings the iphone some competition to keep them on their toes. The palm pre was supposed to be the next big thing ... I haven't even heard of one in months. I expected a little more from google.

That is what I'm getting next.
I have an iTouch already and really like it but I also want to check out Android.
Plus, this way I'm fueling the competition between the two.

I like the idea that Google will sell them as unlocked phones and that they won't maintain control over the apps that can built on the platform. Unfortunately ideology alone isn't enough to sell a phone to most consumers; they need compelling feature(s) to unseat iPhone as the phone to have. Until they come up with a slick UI or some innovate google-specific apps, they're not going to be a big player in the mobile phone market.

The free turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation is a pretty good Android selling point, considering that the TomTom app for the iPhone is $100.
I've been quite satisfied with my Droid so far, and I figure it will only get better as more apps are added to the Android Market.
I'm not really trying to run down the Nexus One, but I guess I would have expected Google to try and really come out with something groundbreaking rather than just incrementally better than the current generation of Android phones.

The turn-by-turn Google maps thing will be built into the default Maps on the iPhone too. My guess is not until the next major release, but Google has already announced that they are making it available to Apple.
I'd still love to get my hands on an Android phone. I need to see it for myself.
