No surprise there. I think the perception of Bronco and the voter backlash would cause him to get hammered in the election, especially when the audit comes out in 3 months.

Bronco's pulling a Mulroney: walk away before they throw you out. Good riddance.

You can still not vote for him. Just pretend he's on the ballot for more fun.

Nature abhors a vacuum.
Who will fill the void of suck left in his wake? I shudder to think.

Not really unexpected. He probably wanted this to be his last term since before the 2007 election. You just can't really announce it until it's less than a year before the next election to avoid being seen as a lame duck.

As long as Ric McIver is not Calgary's next mayor. McIver is all about political grandstanding. He is only against things, rather than having any sort of real vision for where Calgary should be going as a big city.
As unpopular as Bronconnier has been, at least he actually got things built in Calgary. LRT, road improvements, downtown revitalization in earnest. He started to stear Calgary in the direction of a big city, rather than the backwater with a huge infrastructure deficit he inherited from do-nothing Duerr. He also took on issues that were less than sexy such as smart growth, financing growth and putting in fiscal frameworks and agreements with developers that made them more responsible for taking on some of the burden of the cost of outward growth of the city.

Given the general apathy in Calgary he likely would have won again.
Apart from his Liberal social policies, I have liked the fact that he has publically gone to war vs the PC's for more money for the cities in attempt to somewhat balance out the current screwjob in this province.

Well the way is clear now for me to become your leader, your god, your savior. Of course I'd prefer to take power through smart intimidation tactics and saavy political assasinations.
But it doesn't matter, once you people vote me in I'm suspending elections and replacing them with choosen monastic ascentions.

I'm curious to hear actual REASONS why people were unhappy with Bronconnier as mayor. I could list about a million reasons why he is better than Ric McIver ever would be as mayor. For one, he actually had an idea of what he was FOR, not simply what he was against.

IMO, he would have walked away with the win again... easily. Maybe not quite as easy as last time, but he still would have got 65% of the votes.

maybe the new guy will fix 52nd street. I never drove it until recently, and man is it a mess. 3 lanes into one etc., and multiple train track interuptions. At one intersection the train has to block traffic so it can switch tracks. you'd think they'd put the switch somewhere that made sense? this is a fairly main road too! ranting about 52nd.... sorry. fix it mayor!

I dont know why people really expect superstar polticians. Anyone who is legally sane wouldnt want the hassle that comes with those positions which is why you get the classic scum that infests all levels of politics.
