Let this thread fall into oblivion if nothing comes of this, but Twitter right now has reports of a 8.3-8.5 magnitude earthquake near Concepcion, Chile. MSNBC/NY Times have confirmed. Quick Wiki search says population of about 200,000.

No kidding. This could be bad....

If my math is correct from geography class some time ago that's about 90 times more powerful than the Haiti quake

Hopefully the major components of their infrastructure are still intact enough to help those who need it. This could be real bad.

That is massive... wow. Chile is a lot more developed than Haiti, but with a quake this big, I wonder how much that matters.

Let's hope for the best.

BTW, a 6.9 earthquake also hit Japan today. Japan is pretty well equipped to handle such quakes, but it is still a decent sized quake.

On CNN, they were saying it's an 8.8. That's nearly 20 times more powerful than the quake that hit Haiti.

Insane. I can't even imagine the disaster within that area after an 8.3 earthquake (reports said started 8.8). All we can hope for is that the casualties and disaster is as minimal as possible.

The scale is logarithmic... so it's (10^[difference in magnitude])^1.5

Haiti was a 7.0, if this was a 8.8 then (10^1.8)^1.5 = about 500 times more energy released

I think the one in San Francisco about a century ago was around 8.3 in magnitude, so this is one big earthquake.

Wow. This could be quite bad, especially if the tsunami grows in height. The infrastructure in Chile for the most part is built with earthquakes in mind. I guess they're somewhat common there.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru. A tsunami watch has been issued for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. The center recorded a tsunami wave as high as 9 feet.

Chile holds the record for the largest earthquake in the world, according to the USGS. A magnitude 9.5 quake struck the South American country in May 1960 and killed 1,655 people.

The guy on CNN said it was 1000 times bigger than Haiti.
