Places To Play Street Hockey
Hey CP!
Last year when I played street hockey we played at Beddington Community Centre. They have an outdoor rink that is just an asphalt pad in the summer and they leave the nets out there. It was perfect... until a bunch of kids climbed the fence at night and vandalized it. The community association's response was to lock it permanently and not allow its use at all when the ice was off.
Anyway, I am going to talk to Beddington about finding a way to get the arena back open in the summer but I was wondering if anyone knows of facilities similar to this elsewhere that me and my friends could use to play street hockey. They have to be in North Calgary but other than that I would like to hear about any ideas people have.
Thanks in advance!

We used to play in tennis courts during the colder months.
We also used to play at the Strathcona community centre outdoor rink.
Behind schools are generally good spots during Summer, the ground is level and no one is around.

There's definitely no better option than playing in an outdoor rink. Perhaps you can convince your community association to leave the rink open, but just lock up the nets? That's what ours did with the replacement nets when the other set was stolen. Then just have everyone who comes out pitch in for two of your own decent quality nets.
If the rinks still have water in them we play on the tarmac of a school against the biggest wall (half court). If there are only a couple of us we'll play on someone's street (which sucks when you shoot wide).

The nets weren't the problem. I don't actually understand the logic presented by the community association. The outdoor arena was locked at night. Someone was coming in at night by climbing the fence and vandalizing the boards with spray paint. Their solution was to keep it locked at all hours and allow no access. This prevents someone climbing the fence how exactly?
Anyway, I will talk to them soon and see if we can come to an arrangement.
I was just wondering if there were other outdoor rinks in the north that allowed access in the summer that people knew about.
Thanks for your help!
The school suggestion is a good one too. I will utilize that suggestion soon I think.

We used to play at the outdoor rinks in temple and falconridge all the time, we actually set up a 12 team 3 week tournament a few years back.

The outdoor rink in Citadel is open all year for ice/street hockey. It's great, there are usually people playing there but they always let you join right in.

Because of chasing balls, moving for cars, and no boards to use!

Creates problems with chasing balls, gravel and cars.
Outdoor arenas are great. You get a good surface, little to no debris and boards.
This amounts to a lot less time chasing balls around, much happier goalies who aren't always being hit in the face by gravel, and fewer interruptions.

^ Street hockey just isn't street hockey without the punishment of chasing your ball down the street after you miss a wide open net.

We're going to have a generation of hockey players who miss the net on 90% of their shots because the didn't have to chase the ball down the street if they miss it.
I play ball hockey weekly, three of us are in our 30s and the rest are all around 18-21. We play in a gym. One goalie once marveled at how I never miss the net. I told him "I don't want to chase the ball if I miss". He looked really confused, but the two older guys knew what I was talking about.

Back in the day, a good way to get an uncontested shot on net was to be the first one to fish the tennis ball out of the puddle of water.
No one ever wanted to try to steal the ball away from that person at the risk of getting a soaking wet tennis ball in the chest/face.
Oh the memories!

I'll never forget when I was about 13, me and my buddies were playing out in the machine shed on the farm (now that was a bitch to find a ball, having to crawl underneath tractors, tool boxes, and the like).
Anyways, we're playing, and my then 5 or 6 year old brother wants to join in. Sure as shootin' first shot that gets fired hit him square in the eye. The ball was all covered in oil, little stones and water. Needless to say, ball hockey was done for a little while.
