I typed "PSN" into twitter and it would appear that everybody on the planet is absolutely freaking out about this. I'm not over-the-moon mad just yet, but I am a little annoyed. My wife took the baby to her parents for a visit so I have been waiting for tonight for weeks to play some games. I'll wait, but if this is still down tomorrow night my rage-o-meter might start to rise.
What's interesting (and troubling) from where I sit is that I had no idea single player games were so reliant on the trophy/online system. It's so weird I almost question if that's the cause of the problem (see arbitors post above me about the calendar). If just the PSN goes down for a while I can see that being an issue but not a huge problem. Thing is this little issue has rendered the gaming capabilities of the system almost useless. I wasn't able to play 95% of my downloaded games. The only one I did manage to play was Super Stardust HD ... and that reverted it back to the demo version! I read on twitter somebody else mentioned that all his games downloaded from the psn became demos as well.
People are freaking out that their saves and trophies will all be gone. That would be such a pain in the ass if true.

This has nothing to do with the PSN.
I just got home and turned on my PS3 without an internet connection and the same problem exists. This is definitely some sort of internal clock problem not related to the network. Apparently some models are not experiencing this problem (ps3 slim.)
As a customer, I'm pissed but as a technology buff, I'm interested to see how this unfolds. Check out the thread on NeoGAF to get minute by minute updates. Very interesting posts/theories on what's going on!!
Sony has acknowledged the problem but has not yet released a statement.

Well Sony sure outdid MS - instead of a high rate of RROD, Sony just (temporarily I hope) bricked millions of their units in one fell swoop, haha.
Haven't tried my PS3 out yet, but would bet it will be the same problem.
Sony had better get this fixed ASAP, if they can't fix it, do they tell all the PS3 owners "too bad, so sad, go buy a slim model"?

Working under the assumption that this problem will be fixed within 24 hours (link below) this is nowhere near the RROD problem. Losing functionality for a day is brutal and Sony will take it up the ass for this one from everybody, but it's not on the RROD scale imo.
The thing that's driving me insane is people that actually think this is a strategic move that Sony is using to sell more slims (I'm not referring to I H8 Crawford here). I've been jumping around forums and twitter and the number of people that think Sony put a bug in their own system to sell more units is astounding to me.
Kotaku is reporting the problem is related to the clock. http://kotaku.com/5482811/

Haha mine still works. Supposedly it's caused by the same hardware clock bug similar to what happened to the zune a couple years ago. So basically just wait it out for it to fix itself. If it doesn't though...
And ya people are stupid, developer debug units have the bug also so it's not any sort of strategic move.

Sony is now recommending you don't turn on your system or you may lose data. If I lose trophies I'll be pretty pissed, and I'm not even near the same level as a trophy whore.

Any reason why they suggest you don't turn on your PS3? I don't care about losing trophies or anything like that but if my save games go down the toilet I'll be very angry.
Also, I played Uncharted 2 last night and I didn't have any issues. After I finished playing (around 12:30am) I noticed the time was weird and couldn't automatically set it. The game was able to save fine so I'm not sure if this would even break game saves.
Couldn't one just change the date to a different date and avoid all of this?

I could care less if I lost all my trophies, it'd just give me a reason to pop in some of the old games that have been sitting on the shelf.
It's just annoying that you can't even play games offline. What kind of deal is that? The games shouldn't be that tied into trophy calibration and whatever to the point that you can't even play something like Heavy Rain on the first week its out. I mean it's one thing if the network went down and you couldn't play games online, things happen. But not being able to play a game offline by yourself is a big time failure.
You know I probably wouldn't even think about it I go days without firing the thing up but it's the fact that I can't that makes me want to play it.

It's Bill Gates, just like in the movie Dead Man on Campus, he wants our brains.
