Well I am planning on visiting my family in sunny San Fransisco, with probably a side trip to Las Vegas.
I will check out the usual stuff like Alcatraz, The Golden Gate bridge etc......
But I am very unfamiliar with the area?
What are some of the things to check out there?
I will be going for about 10 days total.

Have breakfast at Victoria's... near the cable stop down by the piers.
When are you going? June, July are FREEZING there.... I'm talking 16 celcius highs at times.
To quote some guy in the Escape from Alcatraz movie "The coldest winter I've ever experienced was the summer in San Francisco"
But still, it is the best city in the World. Bring a camera.

Sausolito across the bay is a nice spot for a luncheon.
If you're checking out the Golden Gate then go across to the other side of the bay, then through a mile or so long tunnel then up to a cliff overlooking the bridge. Now THAT's the view you want. Awesome.
Go for a run in Golden Gate park.
Ocean Beach is pretty nice for a long, long walk but Baker's Beach is probably more scenic.
Alcatraz lives up to its billing. Get the taped tour.
You have to take a rental car on the straight up and down streets a little ways off the downtown . . . . that's a bit of a hoot. Do a Bullitt.
If you have the time, scoot down to Santa Cruz on the coast with, if I have the right place, a fairly gigantic amusement park. But a nice town too. There are some back road ways to do that with nice views of the coast and a few places to stop.
Sonoma is a nice town for an ice cream cone up north . . . . and taking the back roads there, maybe looking in on the vineyards in the Napa area.

Sausalito is great as mentioned above. Take a walk near the Presidio under the Golden Gate bridge. Eat a crab at the Wharf. See a Giants game if you can get tickets. We got some from a Scalper for $40 a pop for $8 deats but worth every penny. It was the Giants vs Dodgers which was a huge rivalry.

There is a lot to do in the bay area.
As said above too, go to Santa Cruz for a day, great beach, great wooden roller coaster, and a fun area to be in. across from Santa Cruz is Monterey (sp?) and it's a nice little town, with a pretty nice aquarium.
Go to China Town for sure; you can get great deals on everything. There is a great Japanese Tea garden in Golden Gate Park (right near height and ashbury), Make sure you hit Fishermen’s Wharf and Geradhelli square (they always give free chocolate samples and have great ice cream. Check out The Palace of Fine art too (on the way to Golden Gate Bridge) it is kind of got a Greek/roman feel to it. There is Also Coit hill Moment with a great view.
Also there is a great America in the San Jose area for a good theme park. and depending on what time of year you go try to get to a renaissance fair, really interesting and really fun.
Don't worry about the weather. It is only cold if the fog rolls in (Which depending on your luck you may experience most the time) But I've been to the city a couple of times and I've never had a cold day there in the summer. And if it is cold just start heading east, the temperature literally raises 1 degree per mile travelled.
That quote about the "coldest winter I ever felt was a summer in San Fran." I believe is a Mark Twain quote

Not true... I went in July. Sunny every day, felt like 16 degrees, windy as hell had Sun burn AND wind burn. Then again, I went in October and it was about 25 degrees celcius every day.
But who knows with the way weather is these days, that could've changed. But in all honesty even if it is chilly it won't in any way shape or form ruin the fun of the city. It's just amazing.

And no matter how much you want to see Candle Stick Park (or 3coom park, whatever it is called now) DO NOT GO THERE unless it is a game day. That is not the safest neighbourhood in the world.

The most crooked street in the world is a cool road to drive down.
If you're into Great White Sharks - take a boat tour of one of the most GW shark infested areas in the world - The Farallon Islands.
I was just there last November - its alot of fun.

No doubt... and Candlestick sucks anyway in comparison SBC Park. What a place to watch a game. You can actually see games for free under the right field stands where McCovery cove is.

Yeah I didn't feel too safe out there, until some one ask me "What the hell are you doing here?" I told him I was trying to find my way out...
He proceeded to tell me the "safest" way out... not the quickest
