CP Opinion Request.....
What would your take on this be.....
CP User "<removed>" posted a "new" Microwave for sale here on CP.
<removed>
We traded e-mails and I agreed to buy it. Picked it up around the 17 of Jan. Went to his house an picked it up. He plugged it in to show operation but we didn't heat anything in it.
It sat in my house for a week or so till I got the necessary mounting hardware.
Finally getthe unit mounted and ready for usage. The first time my wife goes to use it...Zap....no worky at all.
Tray turns, everything appears to work except the heating part.
Contacted Seller and was basically told to try and switch it at Home depot for a new unit.
Asked him to try and request a reciept from Home Depot for purchase so I could fix it unere warranty and was told
"Im not going to spend half my day at work dealing with this"
I am now waiting a part to come in for repair and will be out another 150 -160 bux for repair by the time it is completed.
For that plus the original purchase price I could have bought new.
I do realize that there is a risk in buying a new "used" appliance but it shouldn't crater on first usage.
Should it ???
How would you guys handle this........

Tough call, you did have it sitting around for a week, and you might have had it surge when you plugged it in.
I think the fair thing IMO is you guys split the repair cost.

So <removed> sold you a faulty microwave and is not willing to help you remedy the problem? Maybe you should use 'other means' like the poster above suggested and throw it through the window, or burn his house down.

I'm not suggesting it was fauty at all. Or at that he knew about it.
Personally I wouldn't sell something "as new" and then leave someone hanging when it craters on first run.

The least he could do is find a receipt for you.

No kidding. I've done way more to help buyers after a sale if something hasn't gone totally right than just request a reciept. Brutal.

This is a little public, no? Perhaps you should be dealing with this with the mods.

The mods didn't sell him a microwave... Why would he need to deal with them?

When your buying used items its always buyer beware, there's really no code of conduct.
I'm not going to bash either side about this, maybe the seller didn't know that the unit was dis-functional, maybe it worked for him previously.
But to me there has to be an obligation to really test something thats used before you hand your money over.
But maybe you can negotiate a split cost or something.

Because there are some things that aren't kosher on CP. Openly discussing a buy/sell gone wrong might be one of them.
Maybe I'm wrong, hence why I posed my original post as a question.

Gotta go with buyer beware on this one, sorry.
Purely my opinion, but it sounds like the seller tried to do everything right (plug-in test) and should be allowed to wash their hands of the microwave (working or otherwise) once the money exchanged hands.
I would think very highly of the seller if he/she were to pay a portion (half?) of the replacement part. That said, I wouldn't think any less of them if they didn't.
