Silly tax question about donations to charity

Two kids just came to my door as it's Heart Month for the Heart & Stroke foundation. Usually if I do donations, it's online and I get a printed receipt etc. but with them they just had a Heart & Stroke foundation envelope that you put money in and you fill in your details on the envelope.

Is there some way I can get a reciept for this or other canvassing if it's a larger sum?

Ask the children to write you out a receipt on construction paper.

I was going to keep one of them as collateral but I didn't have a dog kennel handy.

With an organization like that I would suspect that they will mail back your receipt. If not - just keep the information on hand, date, amount of donation, etc and inquire about it after the fact. It shouldn't be a problem.

I just donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation from a door to door person and he gave me a written receipt right then.

I don't know how to tell you this, but I think you've been had. About 10 years ago, I think people found out that was a front for Vandelay Imports & Exports.

Hmm, those kids just bolted, even worse, they left their bic behind so I know the "pledge paid" checkbox beside my name hadn't been checked off!
