Can-Am Spyder
Does anyone know anything about these rigs?
Any good or bad reviews?
I am looking at picking up one of these rigs instead of a motorcycle for the wife and I.
Anyone have the new RT model who can provide some insight?
Thanks!

Ariel Atom is only street legal in the UK because it's obviously very unsafe. You are basically dead if you have a collision with an SUV. Anywhere.

It was late one night last summer, I was on my VFR, stopped at a red light on the Lougheed Hwy in Port Coquitlam, one of these pulled up beside me. I raised my lid and said cool bike, he thanked me and we both rode on our separate ways. Good story, eh.
I'd check out the tires, if there are only sport tires available, it may not be that good on gravel roads.

Dumb question, but you'd still need your class 6 (in alberta) to drive that right?

We've had one for two years actually. A red 2008 SE5 (semi-auto).
Let me list the biggest pros and cons first:
Biggest pro: people treat you like a rock star.
and
Biggest con: people treat you like a rock star.
The attention can be a lot of fun, a huge ego boost, and all around good... up to the point where you're running on fumes and desperatly seeking a gas station without some dude who's going to chat your ear off for 30 minutes...
Real pros:
* All the fun of riding on two wheels with the stability of three. I don't worry near as much about gravel, hidden black ice, or off angle intersections as I do riding a bike.
* A clear, upright, comfortable riding position.
* A good level of factory and aftermarket parts support.
* A great dealer in Calgary (Bowcycle who've been super).
* Good for single or two-up riding.
Pro/Con depending on perspective:
* It doesn't lean like a bike so the riding is actually trickier in the twisties. You have to ride it a lot like a ski doo (I know, go figure) with a lot of sliding your butt back and forth on the seat to weight the inside of the corner. This is of course far less the case if you're just out for a quiet Sunday afternoon ride.
Cons:
* Bit expensive (buy what cool new groundbreaking product isn't).
* The stupid questions you'll end up answering a hundred times over...

Yes you do.

They aren't really like motorcycle tires -- the tred section is flat, not rounded. The tires look a lot like a sport all-season car tire. They're fine on gravel.

Which totally sucks. You can register them in the US as some kind of kit car, but not in Canada. I went to an Ariel Atom track day where I got to drive one of those things at Race City a few years back. Most fun I think I've ever had, the Atoms are bad. Ass.

The Spyder reminds me of my sled. In fact, it looks like a lot of the components have been incorporated from my Summit. Can you climb with it?

I love my adopted country but the reality that you can shoot heroin in the open on the downtown east side but god forbid 3 or 4 people a year get killed in an Atom or some other small scale kit car is inane.
