Free Public WiFi
I see a network named this various places around downtown and it will connect with a strong signal but no internet access is available. Anyone know if the city is planning something for downtown?

I name my router "Free Public Wi-Fi" just to screw with the neighbors.
As soon as they try and connect, WHAM! Please enter your password!

They have Telus wifi at the airport, but it is not free.
FYI, if you pay $25 a month you can get unlimited Hotspot roaming that will cover all Starbucks, Second Cups, some restaurants, the airport, etc..

Man I want to move somewhere with 3G coverage and a good data plan. I was in Vegas for CTIA this past week and our 3G capable phones FLEW, it was great.
Fido has 3G here as well I guess, but in Canada that's a BAD thing since I can blow through my data plan with 5 web pages :/
Lots of free Wifi down there as well, INCLUDING the airport thank you Vegas.

The Law Library at the new courthouse in downtown Calgary doesn't have free wi-fi either. It's offered through Bell (I think).
What about Calgary public libraries?

HAHAHA greedy canadian s ( ) all of our starbucks, panera breads, and such are usually free wifi ...... i love it ....... airports though are not free and that sucks!!!!!!!
here is what i find funny. I recently did a lil traveling for work. We stayed at a cheap hotel one night and had free wi-fi it was about 80 bucks a night... then we went the next night and stayed at a nice place ( around 175 a night) and it the wi fi cost us 10 bucks a day lol

Could this be a City of Calgary project? I heard rumors they were going to be setting up free wifi access with obvious restrictions at CTrain platforms, maybe they are expanding it.
Its also possible that users name their hotspot that, there is a growing movement of people who open up there networks for free (the whole free internet bs).
Are you able to actually connect to the network or no?
If you are, try to remote onto the router to see if there is a WAN IP, if there is its likely that they address block access or deny port 80 on the dhcp range. On the ones in Toronoto whe I was there for an Exchange conference they had an email address where if you donated something like 20$ or whatever to some open internet charity and emailed them they would give your MAC a dedicated IP.
Sounded kind of interesting but much goody tu shoes lefty for me.

It's defiantly the MS bug. That would explain why i get a lot of linksys and default networks that connect but don't actually go out anywhere. There are wifi hotspots on Stephen Ave but they are disabled. Not sure why.
There has got to be ways to monetize free public wifi hotspots. Sell naming rights and have the landing page contain an ad.
The local papers are deperatly looking for revenue. Sponser a few wifi hotspots downtown and sell ads. It would work better than pubishing those crap dailies that do nothing but blow around in the wind, get stuck on fences and line ditches.
