Google streetview in Calgary
I was driving south down 36th St NE, stopped to 20th Ave, and a car pulled up beside me in the turning lane (turning onto Rundlehorn Dr). This was at around 12:15.
There was something weird on the roof, lookes like one of the trailer hitch bike racks but strapped to the roof. Then I noticed the passenger door. It had a sign with the Google logo on it. The plates were from California. That thing on their roof was the camera - it had a bunch of wires from it going in the backseat window on the driver's side.
So if anyone sees a Chevy Cobalt with California plates and something strapped on the roof, be sure to wave!

Wonder why they would use a low car such as a cobalt instead of the higher up van.

No idea, although the thing on the roof sticks up 2 1/2, 3 feet.

I swear I saw the vehicle a couple of months ago from the train along Memorial. I waved, but I fear the glare from the sun might hide me.

I was sitting on my porch a couple weeks ago when one of these vans drove by, except that it wasn't google. It had an orange and white logo of a young girl riding a canada goose. I typed in the name of the company and sure enough it was a street mapping company, but I've drawn a blank on the name right now.

I read in some article that there were already had images of the bigger cities in Canada. Some imaging company based out of here is doing a lot of the work on it. Can't find the article though...

There was no doubt about this one - Google was written on the passenger door.

They use the VW Beetle because the front of the car is out of the camera's view. I would assume that the reason that they use the Cobalt is the same.
The photographs, provided to Google by Immersive Media, an imaging company headquartered in Calgary

Does that mean I'll be able to look up your address and see you peering out from behind your bedroom curtains?

I just wish they'd get the satellite map updated. My house which will be 4 years old soon still shows up as a canola field.

Bump. Today Australia has been added to Google streetview and sure enough you can see our house and even zoom up on my girlfriend's and my balcony (thankfully we were not outside at the time). It is pretty cool though. (I won't tell you where my house is but if you want a hint it is across the road from the Canadian Consulate!)

At least you can still see a field. I can't believe Red Deer has the crappiest resolution of any place in Alberta. Of course the surrounding area is fine.
