Calgary surpasses Ottawa to become Canada's 4th largest metro
Suck it Ottawa!
We're #4! We're #4!
Calgary surpasses Ottawa, now Canada's fourth largest metro area
By Jason Markusoff, Calgary HeraldFebruary 5, 2010 11:06 AM
CALGARY - It’s not something to normally brag about, but Calgary is now number four.
A new Statistics Canada population report says the Calgary metropolitan region’s had 1,230,248 inhabitants last July, pushing it ahead of the Ottawa-Gatineau region (1,220,674 people) for fourth place nationally.
Despite the halt to Alberta’s boom, a surge of new Canadians continued to move to the petroleum capital, accounting for nearly half of Calgary’s 38,402-person increase between 2008 and 2009....

A break down by natural increase, inter and intra provincial migration and international immigration. Notice how high Calgary's internation immigration numbers are becoming:

Interesting, i always thought we passed them long ago.
I guess its because they lump Gatineau with Ottawa that kept them ahead until now.

Same, why don't we lump the surrounding areas too than?

Calgary would also probably jump another 50,000 or so if they didn't cut off our metro area right on the southern city limit. Okotoks isn't counted in Calgary's CMA, which is ridiculous.

projected to hit 1.5 million by 2017. Where will an extra 300000 people live?

They might be doing that now - ex. Cochrane, Airdrie, Okotoks?

The surrounding areas to the north, west and east are all included:

The inclusion of surrounding municipalities to the central city is based on commuter numbers - I think the areas south of Calgary collectively don't yet meet that threshold.

Some are. Rockyview County (formerly MD of Rockyview), Chestermere, Airdrie, and Cochrane are all included in Calgary's Central Metropilan Area (CMA). As Bunk mentions, MD of Foothills is not, which means that Okotoks and High River are not included. This has to do with how CMAs are defined. Basically there is not a strong enough relationship between the MD of Foothills and Calgary (what percentage of people live in one and work in the other) for it to be counted in the CMA. It's all a matter of time for that to happen though.
Refer to the map Bunk posted above to see what is included, and what is not.

I know its a stretch but I'm sort of surprised that under that definition, Canmore isn't included. I know way more people then from Okatoks and High River that come here for work.

That seems hard to believe. How can Beiseker be included, but not Okotoks? Half the people I work with downtown seem to live in Okotoks.
Not to mention the fact you could nearly throw a rock from the southern city limits and have it land in the Sheep River valley.

It should also be noted that Calgary has for the most part operated in a much different way than a lot of other metro areas. Calgary works on what is referred to as a "uni-city" model, where the super-majority of the population lives in one large municipality (Calgary) as opposed to surrounding muncipalities and towns.
Calgary's uni-city CMA is also different than many North American examples where there are large areas of farmland between Calgary and its neighbouring towns and cities. Chestermere is the smallest gap. Most large North American metro areas are one large contigeous built area composed of multiple municipalities.
Take Vancouver, there are only 600 000 in the city proper, but 2 300 000 in the GVRD metro, and if you didn't know any better, you could walk across the street and be in a different municipality. Edmonton is another example some may be familiar with. If it weren't for a road sign, you wouldn't be able to tell where Edmonton stops and St. Albert begins.

Dion Phaneuf and Jarome Iginla would beg to differ.

Surprised it took this long.
Ottawa definitely does not have a big city feel to it.
