Default Parking Ticket in Los Angeles

So I was in Los Angeles and my parking meter ran out of time about 10 minutes before I returned to my car and I had a parking ticket sitting on my windshield. The car was a rental car and from what I've been able to research I will get charged through the rental agency once they learn that the car was ticketed.

My questions are, should I just wait for my rental car company to bill me or should I pay the fine first? If I pay the fine is there a chance I will also be billed by the rental company? What are the consequences of me not paying the ticket at all (does a parking ticket go any higher than the original jurisdiction it was issued in i.e. city of Los Angeles, could I potentially only get in trouble if I'm back in L.A. or could this come back to bite me whenever I'm in the US). Any advice would be great!

You will get charged by the rental company.

The bill/charge may show up 2 or more months with addded late charges from the city and they will also ding you for a service charge too.

Pay the fine before late charges kick in and before the rental company gets the bill. Hold onto confirmation of the payment of course.

There is no getting out of not paying just only paying more.

I rented a car in Calgary and got a parking ticket in Vancouver and never paid it or ever heard of it again.

Not advocating doing that, but just my story.
