Default Accessing Shaw email remotely

I recently switched from Telus to Shaw and need a way to access email from any computer. Shaw will charge me about $10 per month to add this service. Is there some other way I can do this? I need to be able to access email anywhere I happen to be.

What do you mean? Just go to webmail.shaw.ca and log in. As far as I know, this is free, and I have been doing this for years...

Yup been using webmail.shaw.ca as well.

Webmail is listed as a no-cost extra on shaw's website:

K, he might have something else in mind though. If Shaw is charging $10 for some kind of service, It think he wants access to all his email, not just the new stuff.

Haven't played around with it for a while but if I go home and d/l my messages using thunderbird and then go to webmail, the ones I just got wont show up on webmail.

Have a bad cold, loaded on on cold meds, could be way off here.

I can think of what service this might be for $10. I am interested in what service that might be.

I know that Shaw doesn't let you access the mail server remotely by POP3 - only when you're attached to the Shaw network. Webmail is a pain as I like to have all of my email in Thunderbird.

So what I do is setup an auto forwarder to my email address that isn't my Shaw one (in this case, on my own domain). I then get those emails buy POP3 or IMAP when I'm away. I believe that Gmail lets you access your mail by POP3, so you may be able to auto forward to Gmail, check that Gmail account in Thunderbird, and use the Gmail server for your outgoing email. You can still set your "from" address to be your Shaw one, so for all intents and purposes, your email would still appear to come to and from your Shaw address, but you'd use Gmail as your middleman.

Really, they block pop3 access from outside shaw?

Does Telus do that? I am surprised I havent heard about that before - that seems to be a very dodgy practice of true.

If you have to change your email address anyway (from Telus to Shaw), why not just move to Gmail or something like that? Then you're independent of your ISP and you won't have to change your email address again if you ever change your ISP again.

Indeed they do. Their solution, when asked, is "use webmail".

Not sure about Telus, however.

that's actually a client side option. if you go into Thunderbird and Options, somewhere in there should be a checkbox called "Delete mail from server after retreiving" or something similar. if you uncheck that then your email will stay on webmail even after downloading it to your PC

Yep, got it all backwards. I just checked mine and realized I have "delete after download" checked.

I stand corrected... thanks for the info. I know that they used to restrict POP3 and SMTP when not connected on their network, but they have obviously changed this. I probably didn't notice because I no longer need that particular service.

I would imagine that restricting the SMTP access is a way of dealing with people using Shaw's servers to send spam. If they're connected, in theory, they should be a client and thus easier to crack down on.

I'll have to call Shaw again, I guess. When I called a few weeks ago they told me that I would have to pay $10 to be able to access email from another computer (webmail). I don't know if this is for another service and my query was misundestood but I shall find out. Another problem is I also have Shaw at home and my address there is also firstinitiallastname@shaw.ca. When I go to Shaw webmail I get my home account and not my business account, which is the one I need to access when I'm away.

when you go to webmail.shaw.ca, you're given the option to login with a username and password. the usename is just your email without the @shaw.ca part, so to login to your other account just type it's name in instead

Shaw never gave me an email address for my office system. Being as I now have work and home Shaw email, I would assume both addresses would be the same. I'll have to call Shaw. Thanks, all.

Okay, problem solved and no $10 monthly fee. I don't know what the other fellow was talking about when I called before, but Peter at Shaw walked me through setting up an address for myself. I can now use Shaw webmail and can now ditch this lousy 1and1.com webmail thing that I have been using. Thanks to all for the comments.
